Wahl Ultima Plus Shaver
Wahl Ultima Plus Shaver
Price: £49.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable for the price, 22 April 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Wahl are a good brand mainly known for their barber shop hair clippers but they have branched out into hair dryers, dog grooming and other areas in recent years. The home range of mens' grooming equipment doesn't quite have the build quality of their professional lines and this shaver is no different in that respect. It has an old fashioned design and sadly it's entirely made of plastic, but the essential components are of a good quality.

The cutters & foils themselves give an excellent close shave, and the charging system is right up there with the best. A full one hour charge will give 45 minutes of cordless shaving and like premium shavers costing a lot more, you can also run the unit direct from the mains. A few people are still complaining that electric shavers come with a 2-pin plug but this is the case for all shavers and has been since the dawn of time. The plug is designed to be used with a bathroom shaver socket, but if you don't have one you can always purchase an adaptor which allows you to plug the device into a standard UK mains socket. These adaptors can be purchased for a couple of pounds.

The carrying pouch is a little poor in that there is only room for the shaver itself and not the charger or grooming accessories. A small issue and not a dealbreaker at this price point. What you do get is a fantastic close shave and one which comfortably beats any other brand at the RRP. I have a shaver from a big name brand which cost three times the price of this Wahl and it can't compete.

Thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good solid option, 22 April 2015

If you are looking for some basic software to load your camera or phone videos via USB, edit them, apply a soundtrack and/or some titles, then burn the results to DVD then this is the product for you. The interface looks old fashioned and it is rather clunky, although user friendly too. Yes you can do a lot of these things now straight from Windows but the Microsoft burning methods aren't as straightforward as they are here. You'd also miss out on some of the funky titling, so for the price I think this is a better option. This isn't really suited to the more professional user though.

Sage Instant Accounts 2015 (PC)
Sage Instant Accounts 2015 (PC)
Price: £118.96

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to beat overall, 18 Mar. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a basic package from what is undoubtedly the industry leader. It has everything the small business or sole trader needs, and is priced competitively for what it offers.

Whilst not quite as intuitive for the first time user as some of the other products on the market, what you do get with this is industry-wide acceptance. Every accountant knows and uses Sage software, so when you have them look over your accounts it will be a very quick and easy process. With the included 'Sage Drive' both you and your accountant can have remote access to your accounts, and of course HMRC returns are done electronically.

There is 45 days Sage support included in the package so most people should be up and running by the time this expires.

All in all, this product comes highly recommended. It may not be the cheapest package on the market but it is certainly one of the best.

McAfee Internet Security 2015 - 3 PC (PC) [Frustration-Free Packaging]
McAfee Internet Security 2015 - 3 PC (PC) [Frustration-Free Packaging]
Price: £19.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great installment from McAfee, 31 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This software keeps on getting better and better.
It has always been my antivirus of choice because it has never let me down, and that's how you develop brand loyalty. Of course many moons ago this type of software bogged your pc down and tempted you to uninstall it to get some speed back, but that hasn't been the case for many years now. Some of McAfee's competitors still sell software which slows your pc to a crawl, but have no fear where this is concerned.

The price seems to have dropped considerably too but I suppose the lack of an enclosed CD helps there. To install this you need to download direct from McAfee's website using the supplied product key. This is a simple procedure and it of course means that you get the very latest version onboard straightaway.

Recommended.

Sage 50 Payroll: Up to 25 Employees (PC CD)
Sage 50 Payroll: Up to 25 Employees (PC CD)
Price: £359.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A polished, premium product., 23 Jan. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
The industry standard, and the most expensive. Is it worth it? Well, competitor products are getting better all the time and there will surely come a time when Sage isn't the be all and end all when it comes to accounting packages. At the moment though, the top firms and accountants still use it and for that reason alone it carries some weight that the others don't. If you're a small business or a sole trader, the cost versus benefits probably isn't worth it but for medium and larger businesses you'll probably want to go with the industry giant.

Included with the software is a full 12 months of telephone and online support, which can be invaluable for those unfamiliar with its operation or for those who wish to send as little work as possible in the direction of their accountant. This surely must be one of the perks of purchasing software such as this. As accounts can be sent electronically to your accountant, and of course tax returns direct to HMRC, if you're savvy you can make sure that any accountant input (and expense) is minimal.

All in all, I would say that this software is highly recommended. There are also 250 green wageslips included in the package, and of course more can be purchased if and when necessary.

QuickBooks Premier 2015 (PC)
QuickBooks Premier 2015 (PC)
Price: £129.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Very user friendly and yet extremely powerful software., 19 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is the top of the range offering from Intuit and although expensive it is much cheaper than the premium products sold by Sage, and yet every bit as comprehensive.
Besides the basics such as creating invoices, managing PAYE and calculating VAT, Intuit have packed in several additional features like the ability to track sales & expenses, stocktaking, calculating job costs & customer discounts, and the facility to send VAT returns to HMRC via eFile.

Aside from the price, what makes Quickbooks software so appealing is the ease of use. The user interface is as simple as it can possibly be, and the layout very helpful indeed.
There are several free to access online video tutorials and also an inclusive 30 day customer helpline to speak to Intuit staff. It's just a question of which product suits you and/or your business the best. Thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great price for the first 12 months, 1 Dec. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a very affordable and it must be said very good software package for any sole trader or partnership. Payroll is an extra, and if you need that then although it can be purchased as an add-on, I would suggest getting one of the more inclusive packages higher up in the range.

This version can be used for everything except employee payroll; ie sending invoices, sales, stock levels, paying invoices and sending tax returns to HMRC. Everything is accessed online, so you can use smartphones and tablets as well as your trusty pc or Mac.

Online help is provided and there are also educational videos to help you get the best from the software.

The only issue I have is that it's a 12-month licence and after that you need to subscribe to continue using the service. As the whole package is accessed online on secure servers, everything would grind to a halt if you didn't pay your monthly fee from the thirteenth month onwards...

QuickBooks Online Simple Start, 12-Month Subscription (Mac/PC)
QuickBooks Online Simple Start, 12-Month Subscription (Mac/PC)
Offered by Buy Gifts UK
Price: £22.99

4.0 out of 5 stars This is cheap for 12 months of basic accounting, 27 Oct. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a 12 month subscription to Quickbooks, once that period is over then you're looking at a monthly subscription to continue using it. I'm more of a fan of buying things outright but this cloud-based way of doing things seems to be here to stay. One advantage is that you can access your accounts from any pc, tablet, iPhone/iPad or Android device.

Being this the entry level 'budget' offering, there is very little to it. You can import your accounts from Excel or previous versions of Quickbooks, and then amend them from any device. Do make sure you check out the features though, because lots of people are going to want to opt for a product higher up in the Quickbooks range.

QuickBooks Pro 2015 Plus Payroll - 1 Year Subscription (PC)
QuickBooks Pro 2015 Plus Payroll - 1 Year Subscription (PC)
Price: £139.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything under one roof for the small business owner, 27 Oct. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is an outstanding, simple to use basic accounts package for small businesses and sole traders. I like the way that you own the software outright and don't have to pay a monthly fee. I also like the free 30 days of support and, if you're in two minds about purchasing, the 60 day money back guarantee.

This edition of the software includes the payroll feature where you can print payslips, calculate PAYE, record one-off payments, generate P45s & P60s and have your accounts automatically adjusted because everything is done within Quickbooks.

Everything is so simple to use and quick too. I don't think there are any groundbreaking new 'must have' features over last year's version, and unless you want payroll support there is no need to upgrade so frequently. However, for those tempted to jump ship from Sage's entry level products, there really is nothing that should be holding you back here.

Philips Series 9000 Laser Guided Beard Trimmer BT9280/33 for Precise Symmetrical Beards
Philips Series 9000 Laser Guided Beard Trimmer BT9280/33 for Precise Symmetrical Beards
Price: £74.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Good quality but the laser is pointless, 23 Oct. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Strong build quality, a pleasing design, fast charging...and a laser gimmick.
If you just want a decent beard trimmer then this is a good option, but don't think for a moment that the laser feature is a worthy one. It isn't. It doesn't help you any more than just looking at the blades, and as the laser doesn't extend to the sides of the blades you can't line it up with anything anyway.

Also, where is the travel pouch? I think it's outrageous that a trimmer at this price point doesn't come with some kind of case.
