4.0 out of 5 stars Laboratory scene,Resident Evil scenario!!!, 26 May 2013

Actually nearly gave up with this a few times felt no bond with characters and struggling to keep pace of who was who and the action scenes..quite unrelenting action scenes ..imagine a building full of doors and floors and on each one lots of action...then I realised it's a very accurate zombie outbreak scenario set in a top security albeit flawed security laboratory..and Resident Evil sprang into mind and I was enjoying reading this..persevere it's actually really good!!
And what makes it so good is the absolute vileness of the infected, instant rot value and the imaginative thorough destruction and description of them all!!

Devoured this in one sitting and much like a meat beast found it refreshed itself...lots of hints in this episode of nightmares to come indicating we haven't got an easy ride in the upcoming episodes..new developements, new scenarios, introduction and speedy removal of new characters keeping up the interest and energy of this serial novel....delighted to see much loved characters back and a cliff hanger ending!!!

Enjoyed this and kept me going through to the end so the concept of The Whitening is excellent..I'm a huge fan of apocalyptic fiction and this is a really original idea but I think this is more suited to a young adult reader and they would enjoy it hugely!! I had to suspend credibility in a lot of places and just read it for what it was enjoyable lightweight apocalyptic fiction..not quite enough depth for me,slightly stilted dialogues and unbelievable scenarios but I did like the little guy and rooted for him all the way through!!!

Because it meant giving up the characters and the story I was so into!!!Some of the fight scenes in this apocalyptic-zombie tale are amazing, the best I have read for a long while!!! Easy to follow characters and action yet descriptive enough for the reader to taste the atmosphere...spitting right now at the thought!!
Paul Mannering has taken his idea and let his imagination run riot creating a world I hated and characters I loved...my worst nightmares on paper.
There are a few typos and a few tiny tiny edit issues but the story here is so good there is no detraction..instead page turning action at every point. He is not scared of the gross out factor and has a basic turn of phrase that describes it bluntly and how it is...there is nothing pretty about a world run by decay but a good dose of sarcasm helps!!
This book grips you with the first paragraph using phrases such as "gobs of warm flesh" and "He chews her like gum" in the first sentences and this is a civilised lunch being described, the story will hold and twist your guts,Else will hold your heart,I wish I knew his name too...loved every page!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed !! One for Otherland fans!!!, 1 May 2013

Did you like this??Otherland: City of Golden Shadow Bk. 1????
If so then grab this one too...easily just as well written...the theory behind this dystopian adventure set in a fantasy gameworld is that earth has literally become so overpopulated as to be uninhabitable...when there was no more room to build out we built up..you do not actually need more than your living quarters..somewhere to sleep/bathe/eat and an e-womb to connect to the virtual "Nextworld"..the best ones you don't even have to leave..regular people still have to leave their e-womb to take care of their bodies thus enabling their minds to be productive in the virtual!!
It has everything you need..schools,socialising,work and online gaming,so advanced it is amazing...all you need really to exist is a brain BUT be careful you may not be the cleverest species after all.I will not leave any spoilers this is a must read for fans of dystopian/fantasy/gaming fiction and a good read for anyone else!!

I've got to be honest and say when I think of this book I have just read,I smile!!
From our main characters initial introduction ..think a scottish Simon Pegg/Shaun of the Dead..this guy has his little life, bit boring, likes his routine, occasionally checks outside his box to have a nosey at occurrences or strange neighbours..But is so damn chilled and self focussed he fails to spot the obvious...something mate is just not right!! From the strangeness of his upper flatmates to the newly dug over garden with the varying levels and if I can say by the time I find blood outside the door..especially black blood,me ?? I would be freaking a bit!!! Not this guy he's started a diary and it just makes his little world a bit more interesting on paper...what I love is he is so laid back..anybody else would be going dull he is pure Okay,Yep really,Not a problem!!..and it's funny....as the world disintegrates he slowly starts to man up,realising that life could just be changing he makes a plan..and goes to Tesco!!! (so refreshing not to have Walmart in a story!!)..he has Tesco off to a tee really just a regular day barring the odd dodgy employee..hilarious scrapes and fights in the aisles.Brilliantly imagined and described..Even the odd typo does not distract from the tale as it is a diary written by a regular person ,actually makes it more credible!!
Not a happy happy ending but a touch of hope for our new grown up apocalyptic dude..I wish him well ..wicked imagination, great story!!!!

Saw this offered as a free e-book by the author on a zombie fest event on facebook...Free why not try it??? Bit off put by The Alamo title being British and no t really into American History and always thought the Alamo was about Westerns!!
It's not is it and nor is this book...It's Modern and as good as anything I have paid for..if the author has not got a publisher he should be watched because it is excellent and matches up to anything in the genre I have read in print..Zombie genre..
The author says his inspiration for writing was during a tourist visit to the Alamo when he pictured it as a zombie scene..he's got a good imagination and wicked eye for detail and characterisation..not only does he know his scene but he knows people which is what makes the fast paced story rock..you care about the outcome.
A few minor minor typos or word errors, really only a couple so do not detract at all from the story which is great, events roll along, wicked characters and dialogue,a bit of humour,a bit of despair and a LOT OF ZOMBIES...no spoilers in this review, read it for yourself..it's a good one!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and highly readable!, 27 April 2013

This review is from: The Bite (Kindle Edition)
Thoroughly enjoyed this tale of Sami..the book starts with an awful situation which grabbed my attention and pulled me in,one of the main themes through the book is an overwhelming sense of loyalty and love warring with the necessity for survival..the blurring of the lines between good/bad,death/life and reality...think this would really appeal to the teen market too but as an older reader I loved it...some of the characters are quite brilliant, especially a certain green eyed girl!!
If you put away your scepticism and enjoy the story for what it is...fantasy fiction...it's worth a read!!
