5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden gem, 4 April 2014

Like another reviewer, I can't understand why this album is not celebrated more - I bought it for Bouquet, having heard Larry Corryell and Greg Khan do a guitar version in the 70s - but the other tracks stand well up to the passage of time, and Maiden Voyage is a real treat. Wonderful stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says and more, 28 Feb 2014
Fully agree with the other reviewer - the quality of sound and volume is astonishing given the size. I would have preferred an adjustable chorus (like the reverb) but this is a great piece of kit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just needs an idea of the chords, 30 Jan 2014

Some very nice arrangements here, really for the intermediate guitarist who can read tab but who can also glean some info from standard notation; while many can work out the chords from the tab, my only suggestion is that an indication of the basic chords above the staves would help beginner guitarists to enjoy playing the pieces at a basic level and then work up from there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, 12 Dec 2013

This review is from: Kokomo / Rise And Shine (Audio CD)
Like a number of other reviewers, was au fait with Kokomo from the pub rock circuit of the 70's and via "in-house goss" in NME - still have their 1st album on vinyl. A very impressive début album, with some outstanding tracks, such as "I Can Understand It". Wasn't familiar with the 2nd album and have to say that it lacks the zip of the 1st album; a rather samey feel creeps in. A reflection perhaps of some of the personnel changes? As another reviewer has said, worth getting for the 1st album alone.

The Music Weaver: Sandy Denny Remembered
The Music Weaver: Sandy Denny Remembered
Price: £11.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, 4 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Other reviewers have given the biography of Sandy Denny in good detail so no need to add to this - her voice seems to be even more haunting given the knowledge that it is fixed in the past. This collection is a must for anyone interested in our English folk-based songbirds, of which Sandy was primus inter pares.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than more expensive covers, 12 Sep 2013

As per others' comments, this is a very good case and most effective - the only minor improvement I would like to see is a holder for a stylus pen.

In Search of the Trojan War [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Wood at his best?, 30 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like many others, saw this when it first came out and probably took it a little for granted; seeing it again reinforces how much we have changed in a few years, the section in E. Berlin being a key example. Michael Wood has the combination of the journalist's flair for soundbites (and not in a derogatory sense) as well as laying out the story in enough detail. Looking at it again with an older eye, this may well be his best series, in that he carries out an investigation of the legend, not just the history of it. His use of a man-bag at a time when they weren't de rigueur was also ground-breaking, and it can be understood why so many females of the species developed a sudden and deep fascination with Mycenaean pottery... :-D

5.0 out of 5 stars Still their best!, 24 Aug 2013

Had this many years ago when they first emerged and then the CD went awol - recent listening confirms how good they were then. Love the title track in particular. Not sure that they have aged well musically, but it's still a cracking début album.

Lúnasa With The RTE Concert Orchestra
Lúnasa With The RTE Concert Orchestra
Price: £12.66

4.0 out of 5 stars Something missing in the mix?, 4 Jun 2013
Like the other reviewer, am a great fan of Lúnasa but, as per my review of The Kinitty Sessions, there's something missing here. The publicity video on the group's website and the CD pictures would suggest that this is a concert hall recording but there is no recorded audience dimension and the orchestral involvement at times sounds non-existent; the best contribution comes with the slow air An Buachaillin Ban. For those who already have previous CD's, this would appear to be a variant of a Greatest Hits type package; what is perhaps needed is a DVD of the concert and/or a definitive live concert CD. Great musicality as always but it imo didn't quite hit the spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring your own OS map!!, 6 May 2013

Funny, witty, informative, sobering, addictive; the 2nd book by BR that I've read and just as good as the 1st (Bank Manager + Holy Grail). Warning; looking at relevant OS maps can be habit-forming :-)
