5.0 out of 5 stars bravo angela, 27 Nov. 2009
This review is from: My Puccini (Gheorghiu) (Audio CD)
probably the essence of angela's passion for opera is her My Puccini. beautifull choice of arias, beautiful footage of performances and most of all beautifull interview and commentary. I especially liked the way she describes her image of Pucinni, as a composer for sopranos. Very highly recommended.

probably not the best recording of carmina burana, however it is a masterpiece of choral work that will send shivers down your spine in any interpretation

2.0 out of 5 stars dissapointing, 25 Nov. 2009
I had great expectations from this compilation of spanish songs for guitar and soprano, however the soprana was in my opinion poor and the guitar interpretation not very uplifting. Perhaps the choice of spanish songs did not favour any of the two protagonists. I returned the CD.

Atlas of Pain Injection Techniques
Atlas of Pain Injection Techniques
by Therese C. O'Connor MB FFARCSI Dr.
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £62.22

5.0 out of 5 stars as good as it should be, 6 May 2008
As the authors acknowledge in the preface to this book, the role of anaesthetists in managing chronic pain has changed dramatically in the last few decades. This change has mirrored our increasing understanding of the complexity of the physiology of pain perception. The old idea that the nervous system was hard-wired and therefore that simply interrupting the pathway would relieve pain, is now seen as obsolete and sometimes even harmful. It is good therefore to find a book that acknowledges the complexity of pain problems and stresses the need for a multi-modal approach to management, while at the same time reminding us that there are simple injection techniques that can be useful for both diagnosis and treatment.

The book starts with a short overview of the anatomy and physiology, which is a good statement of our understanding of this exciting topic at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It then goes on to describe each of the techniques in detail. The various techniques are grouped together, in a logical and easy to follow manner, and the same format is used for each block. This gives the book a feeling of consistency, but at times tends to over-simplify the subject. Apart from a brief introduction at the start of each section, the text limits itself to how to perform each block. I would have liked to have seen a little more discussion about the controversies surrounding each technique. As with many books on procedures for pain management, this volume scarcely mentions evidence. There are no references in the text nor any attempt at critical appraisal, nor mention of other authors' attempts at critical appraisal of the techniques. At the end of the book, the authors include a suggested reading list of nine other books. Most of these provide further detail about how to do the blocks, rather than opening a debate on how best to use them and their place in the overall management of patients with pain.

This book should probably find a place in every Pain Clinic as a useful guide to the common procedures carried out there. It brings together all the techniques in one handy volume. It will probably be useful to trainees wishing to learn about them and also to experienced practitioners who may wish to remind themselves about a technique that they perform only infrequently.
