5.0 out of 5 stars ONE THAT GOT AWAY PART 2., 22 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was so impressed with season 1 of Samantha Who (as per my review),that I immediately ordered season 2.As it was cancelled after this season,i did wonder if the standard had waned compared to season 1.No,not in the slightest, just as charming and funny as the first season.I'm not saying that SW would have run for years, but to my mind it would have been good for another couple of seasons at least.I think the TV companies really screwed up with this one and let a little gem fall through their fingers.Christina Applegate is an attractive, comic delight in this and,if like me,you're a fan of feel good comedy, you will not be dissapointed with either dvd(region 1 only mind!)

5.0 out of 5 stars SQUIRREL PROOF AT LAST!, 16 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Much as i love sqirrels, they were destroying every seed feeder i was putting out for the birds. This product is the perfect answer to the problem,a bit fiddly but ingeneous!(although its probably only fiddly to me as i am naturally cack handed!).
I recommend this to anyone with over enthusiastic squirrels, the ones near me have to make do with the peanuts now!

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE THAT GOT AWAY..., 4 Feb 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Life,as we all know, can be extremely unfair at times.Samantha Who? was cancelled after just 2 seasons.Just reading that bare fact might understandably lead people to think something along the lines of "ah well, couldn't have been much good, after all, thats what happened to The War At Home".That is the unfair part because, whereas TWAH was unforgivably bad,Samantha Who? is a terrific sitcom. Why was it cancelled then,i hear you cry.As i understand it,the 1st season was well received and got good ratings, all was well, but the 2nd season was for some reason buried in a bad time slot and never recovered. Also,i gather there were cost issues involved due to financial cut backs regarding the making of the programme.A real shame because this is a gem of a show with Christina Applegate outstanding as Samantha,a shallow, obnoxious, yuppie type who awakes from an 8 day coma caused by a car accident and realises that she can't remember anything due to amnesia. As she starts trying to put her life back together, she realises, with some horror, just what an awful person she was.Thats where the fun starts, and its to Applegates credit that, although its her characters mission to make amends and change for the better, the programme never gets too treacly or soft, partly due to the naturally mischevious look that Christina Applegate has that suggests Samantha could never be TOO goody-goody.The support cast is terrific, the lovely Jean Smart is wonderful as Sams amusingly uncaring mother (although, she too is trying to make amends)and the fabulous Melissa McCarthy as her old friend Dena(if their is an actress who radiates as much warmth and goodness as Melissa McCarthy then i've yet to see her).To sum up,this is a very funny, smartly written, well acted sitcom that should have been up there with the best of them. And,refreshingly, just like the brilliant Gilmore Girls,no laugh track, just provide your own!

2.0 out of 5 stars I JUST DON'T GET IT..., 31 Jan 2010
I hate to be a party pooper among all the 5 star rave reviews for this show, and, believe me,i really wanted to like it but i just can't!Having watched some episodes on TV,it left me cold but when someone in the family offered to let me borrow this dvd,i hoped that seeing them in this way might enlighten me.Err..no.I know the Friends comparison is obvious and i'm sure the writers must have had that very much in mind, but this is Friends minus the warmth, wit and good performances.Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad show like the truly vile The War At Home,it's just so bland! The cast, while competant, come over as wooden and i just can't empathise with any of them.Colbie Mulders is the obvious sex appeal but she just isn't funny & a pretty face is not enogth.I actually like Alyson Hannigan but i think she is wasted in this. So,a lonely voice in the wilderness i know, but i laughed very few times and this is meant to be a comedy. Now,if you want great looking gals and laughs, i recommend the first season of the Gilmore Girls to you, that really is 5 star stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still wonderful but with reservations..., 30 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking forward to the 2nd season of the Gilmore Girls as the 1st season had blown me away, the finest example of quality TV since the 1st season of the marvellous Frasier, the perfect combo of superb acting and witty, intelligent script.Sure enogth, the lovely Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel do not disappoint, the uncanny chemistry between them as mother and daughter as brilliant as ever, and the fabulous supporting cast on top form. The reason i've given this season 4 stars and not 5 is that through the introduction of bad boy Jess (and this being Stars Hollow,he isn't that bad!)and the re-introducion of Rorys father Chris, some of the episodes have a more dramatic, almost sombre feel to them that goes against the light touch of the 1st season that i found so appealing. The last episode certainly ends on a downer but i would still recommend this as an excellent purchase, just don't expect quite as much feel good factor as the 1st season. The Gilmore Girls is a triumph of quality in an age of throwaway TV,lets just be grateful that there is still the talent out there to produce the odd gem like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY BRILLIANT!, 13 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is said that most American tv is awful but when they do get it right, they strike gold.Well, make no mistake, the Gilmore Girls is good enogth to start a gold rush!Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are simply stunningly good as Lorelei and Rory Gilmore,a 32 year old single mother and her 16 year old daughter living in small town Connecticut.Comedy, drama, pathos and warmth,it's all here in just the right quantities and allied to one of the most articulate and witty scripts i've ever come across.Add a brilliant support cast and this is unmissable entertainment. The quality and consistancy of the acting and script is quite astonishing for a show that last 45 minutes per episode with 21 episodes in this season. This is not the sort of programme that could ever be made in the UK sadly,no downtrodden trash or upper crust stereotypes here, everyone is comfortably off in a material way but this is a story about relationships between family, friends and people in general that applies across the board regardless of status.According to some reports (but not all),Lauren Graham is a bit of a prickly customer in real life, but, whatever the truth is,chances are you'll fall in love with her in the Gilmore Girls. The only huge downside to her character is that she's not a cat person!
I bought this for less than nine pounds from Amazon, what fabulous value and quality!

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD FUN,BUT NOT FOR THE LONG RUN!, 22 Dec 2009

This review is from: Joey: Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Although not a rabid fan,i enjoyed Friends well enogth to invest in the dvd for the first season of Joey and an enjoyable romp it is.It didn't surprise me that it was dropped after 2 seasons as Joeys agreeable goofiness couldn't hope to sustain the longevity of a Friends or Frasier but thats not really the point, which is that this is an amusing and sharply scripted, well acted show with plenty of laughs along the way.A minor gripe is the occasional 'arn't we beautiful' type self praise in the script (which irks this modest Brits reserve!)but, hey,i can forgive a bit of vanity in the name of comedy! This is a great buy for a bargain price, just the thing to brighten up cold winter evenings.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE FAREWELL FRASIER DESERVED..., 16 Nov 2009
Although I think Frasier is one of the best comedies ever,I don't think the final season was quite the return to form that many would have one believe, despite the return of the original writers.Sure, there are some great episodes, but also too much filler and some fairly poor episodes too. What is annoying is to see John Mahoneys character as Martin change from a genuine nice guy to a mean, son of a bitch with a touch of dirty old man who tramples all over Frasier to get to Ronee Lawrence. This is just so ridiculously out of character,I cannot believe they included it,comedic license or not!!Also disappointing is the lousy (to my mind) inconclusive ending.Frasier deserved much better, and the final episode is sadly chaotic to no comic effect, with only Frasiers moving speech worthy of the occasion. So this season is only really essential for completists (like myself),for casual viewers Seasons 1-7 are the most consistently funny and clever comedy you are likely to see anywhere on this planet!

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!, 12 Nov 2009
THIS IS CHARMLESS,WIT FREE TRASH THAT FOX THANKFULLY CANCELLED AFTER 2 SEASONS (ALTHOUGH AFTER 2 EPISODES WOULD HAVE BEEN JUSTIFIED!).FOR A SITCOM TO WORK YOU
NEED LIKEABLE CHARACTERS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH(FRASIER)OR UNLIKEABLE CHARACTERS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH(SEINFELD).TWAH MANAGES TO COMBINE UNLIKEABLE CHARACTERS WITH THE DIREST,LAUGH FREE SCRIPT I'VE COME ACROSS IN ANY AMERICAN SITCOM THAT I'VE SEEN.
IN FACT,THIS PROGRAMME IS SO BAD,IT COULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN IN THE UK,THE LAND WHERE SITCOM HAS DIED!THANK GOODNESS FOR THE 'BIG BANG THEORY',THE IDEAL SITCOM TO TAKE AWAY THE BAD TASTE TWAH LEFT.

4.0 out of 5 stars AN UNDERRATED GEM!!, 11 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
THIS NEVER HAD THE SCOPE OR STRENGTH IN DEPTH TO BECOME A FRASIER OR FRIENDS,AND BY SEASON 4 WAS PRETTY MUCH RUNNING ON AIR BUT CAROLINE IN THE CITY HAS MUCH TO OFFER PARTICULARLY SEASONS 1 AND 2.LEA THOMPSON IN PARTICULAR IS TERRIFIC AS CAROLINE,PARRYING THE SARCASTIC BARBS OF HER ASSISTANT RICHARD AND TOLERATING HER TART WITH A HEART FRIEND ANNIE WHO LIVES ACROSS THE HALL.THE SHEER LIKABILITY OF THE CAST IS A STRENGTH OF THIS VERY WELL WRITTEN SIT-COM AND THE BEST EPISODES HOLD THEIR OWN WITH AMERICAS BEST.THIS IS GREAT FEEL GOOD COMEDY,IT'S JUST A SHAME THAT THE QUALITY OF THE DVD OCCASIONALLY WAVERS (TWO OF THE SEASON 1 EPISODES ARE SO OUT OF SYNC,RICHARD ALMOST ENDS UP MOUTHING CAROLINES WORDS!!) BUT THEIR ARE PLENTY OF OTHER EPISODES TO ENJOY SO IT'S STILL A BARGAIN IN MY BOOK.
