2.0 out of 5 stars Takes forever to achieve anything, 20 Mar. 2015

I tried to persevere with this game, but got fed up. It takes forever to achieve anything. If you leave the game too long, when you return you have to spend ages restoring the characters' hunger, comfort and fun levels; tasks sometimes can't be progressed because one character is "bored" or is "not friendly enough" with someone else. Cooking and various other tasks take so long that you are tempted to use crystals to speed them up, but if you run through your initial supply of crystals too quickly you can end up spending a small fortune buying new supplies. Then when you try to complete a quest, you find it is dependent on your completing a different quest. which in itself can be dependent on completion of ANOTHER quest, and so on. You just seem to spend ages running around collecting things simply in order to stay in the same place, without really progressing through the adventure. Another thing is that if you use crystals for "hints" you usually find you are just wasting them, as they simply point you to something really obvious that you knew already, without solving the problem.

Graphics, concept and characters are great, but I prefer a game that moves at a faster pace, and isn't such a blatant attempt to get you to spend money all the time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Froth, 13 Mar. 2015
This review is from: A Perfect Home (Kindle Edition)
I thought at first this was going to be good, but unfortunately it soon descended into cliche and poorly-drawn, hardly believable characters. I would have been interested to see some proper interaction between Claire and William, but he was written off early on as just a DIY robot, leaving his dim-witted wife free to pursue a Mills & Boon type romance with the ghastly Stefan. And don't get me started on the cartoonish mother-in-law from hell!

Very disappointing. OK for a holiday read if you have a very small brain and don't want anything too taxing.

Loved this - plenty of gameplay, good story, lovely graphics. Costs more than some other games, but well worth it. Kate Walker is cool!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that good, 23 Feb. 2015

Rendell writes so beautifully, you get drawn into her stories, so it takes a while before you realise that the plots are mostly rubbish. I can't believe there is anyone out there who is so dim that they couldn't guess whodunit in the Devenish case(s), but as usual it takes Wexford about 100 years to spot the bleedin' obvious. How this incompetent man manages to keep his job is a bit of a mystery in itself.

The class snobbery in Rendell's books went out of date along with Agatha Christie. The "lower orders" all talk and act like characters from a 1940s Ealing comedy, except that they are neither funny nor interesting.

The Kindle edition is not particularly well constructed. Apart from dodgy punctuation (which certainly never occurred in the printed versions) there are various irritating American spellings - eg, "pedophile", "favorable", etc. But the worst mistake is the lack of gaps between certain paragraphs to indicate that the story has switched to a different venue, with different characters. This is frustrating and at times confusing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very badly written, 16 Feb. 2015
This review is from: The Back Road (Kindle Edition)
A fairly interesting story line, but very poorly written. The author seems incapable of coining a single interesting or original phrase. The characters are mere ciphers, names on a page, and their silly, trite, conversations do not make them any more substantial or believable. Very poor stuff, and I'm amazed at all the high reviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 10 Feb. 2015
Good story, well told. It struck a cord, as my mother had dementia in the final years of her life. Only - minor - criticisms are that I didn't see the point of Helen moving her mum into her own house, if she was then going to leave her alone all day, as Maud obviously needed full time care. Also didn't think it was feasible that Helen would leave Maud in the care of a total stranger, at a bus stop, even if only for ten minutes.

But these are small points - it's a good book and I enjoyed it.

If you like gothic nonsense, with completely unbelievable characters and an incredibly silly plot, then this is for you. If not, I would suggest reading something more adult.

Really enjoyed this. Nice writing style, good plot. I did guess whodunnit, but never mind. I liked the characters, especially Rachel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice earrings, but badly tarnished on receipt, 11 Jan. 2015

Pretty earrings at a very reasonable price. They were delivered promptly, well-packaged. However I was somewhat disappointed, on opening the box, to find that they were very badly tarnished. Although they buffed up nicely with application of a silver polishing cloth, one doesn't want to receive new jewellery in a grey and dirty-looking state, and I think the seller was remiss in this regard.
