Guilt is My Shadow [DVD]
Guilt is My Shadow [DVD]
Dvd ~ Patrick Holt
Price: £9.75

3.0 out of 5 stars 1950 Devon set drama., 22 May 2015
This review is from: Guilt is My Shadow [DVD] (DVD)
1950 British drama starring Patrick Holt, Elizabeth Sellars and Peter Reynolds.
A solitary Devon farmer (Holt) gets an unexpected visit from his adult nephew (Reynolds) who is, in reality, on the run from a bank robbery gone wrong. When Reynolds' mistreated wife (Sellars) turns up, she and Holt form an attachment (restrained affection, this was 1950). Reynolds true - rotten - colours gradually reveal themselves and tragedy ensues.
A slightly overlong but well acted and beautifully shot melodrama, unusually set on location in glorious, sunny Devon.
Of its time and a bit underplotted for its 83 minute length but still an enjoyable, good looking film.
Picture and sound are crystal clear, as is usual with Network DVD.

Not the greatest quality but better than expected and seems good value for £15 including postage.
Good (if slightly generous) fit and warm without being thermonuclear.
Ideal for indoor wear as well, due to it being so lightweight and comfortable. Large pockets are useful too.

Ronseal WRWH500 500ml Wet Rot Wood Hardener
Ronseal WRWH500 500ml Wet Rot Wood Hardener
Price: £9.68

4.0 out of 5 stars Stops the Rot., 26 Jan. 2015
Used it for repairing the rotten end of a carport frame which was very exposed to the elements.
Prepare thoroughly: get all the rotten wood out, get the good wood totally dry and liberally apply hardener. Sets like iron.
Seven years later and the carport has needed no more treatment and is rot free.
A product that works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magnum Opus, 17 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Written by a clearly knowledgeable enthusiast this insightful little book captures the essence of 70s cars and motoring succinctly and accurately.
The author's objectivity demonstrates that, despite industrial unrest, political strife (and interference) and rubbish cars made in this decade, there were also many fine models, plus significant motoring advances and technological innovations.

British marques ruled at the start of the 70s but were in serious decline by the end, thanks in part to often superior foreign alternatives, which is one of the reasons so many people of my generation who grew up in the 70s, have such fond memories of now forgotten makes and models. Who can remember the Vauxhall Magnum 2.3 saloon (a fast Viva), the author can and so can this reviewer whose Grandad had one (they were QUICK, or seemed so to me at the time).
An informative, entertaining and nostalgic read, written by an author with no axe to grind.

Golds Gym Traditional Dumbbell - 25kg
Golds Gym Traditional Dumbbell - 25kg

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Balanced Dumbbells, 14 July 2014
Had mine several years and they're the best dumbbells I've owned.
The combination of thick, heavy bar with spheres on the end (flattened underneath to stop roll) spreads the weight more evenly and makes for a well balanced, inherently stable dumbbell. Even for smaller hands the thicker bar isn't an issue and they always feel secure when exercising.
The rough finish is poor but doesn't detract from the product's intrinsic good qualities and performance.
Definitely recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep on Tracking, 1 Jan. 2014
Suitable for short and medium walks over tracks, paths, pavement etc. Good ankle support for fabric boots and generally comfortable. Sole wear and grip average for this price of boot, sole rigidity good. Fairly waterproof but a coat of Nikwax spray gave a significant improvement. Sizes a bit tight so consider going one larger. Laces self destruct in short order.
Overall, two months in and satisfied so far.

Another Life [2001] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Natasha Little

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do Justice, 21 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Another Life [2001] [DVD] (DVD)
Someone will make a good film about this contentious murder case one day, this isn't it.
The key elements in the case are: The controversial nature of the trial and resulting convictions; Mrs Thompson's letters; and the two accused's totally contrasting behaviour in court, i.e. her self-serving dishonesty and Bywaters' nobility (this in turn contrasted with his vicious murder of Percy Thompson). Instead, in this 2001 film version, the love triangle element is heavily overplayed and badly played in the cases of the male leads, who are also miscast. Nick Moran's performance as Mr Thompson is amateurish and crass. Natasha Little however does a fair job as Edith Thompson and the film looks good, but it's a serious case of what might have been.
This wasn't a 'tragic romance' it was a story of infidelity, an unhappy marriage, a brutal murder and a controversial court case.
No-one will ever know whether Mrs Thompson was simply a fantasist or whether she DID try to poison her husband, so to portray her almost entirely as a victim as this film does, is extremely disingenuous. Her letters to Bywaters hanged her as, unlike his letters to her, he'd kept them all.

The best screen version of this case I've seen, and would recommend, is Lady Killers - The Complete Series 2 [DVD] episode: 'The Darlingest Boy', with Gayle Hunnicutt as Mrs Thompson. Unlike 'Another Life' it relies far more on facts and actual courtroom testimony.

The Greed Of William Hart [DVD]
The Greed Of William Hart [DVD]
Dvd ~ Tod Slaughter
Price: £12.99

3.0 out of 5 stars Shut up or I'll bite your brains out, 13 Aug. 2013
Tod Slaughter stars in this Edinburgh set tale of early 19th century Irish graverobbers Burke and Hare, with the names over-dubbed to Moore and Hart.
Hart (Slaughter) and his accomplice Moore (Henry Oscar) 'procure' i.e. murder, destitutes and sell the corpses to anatomists.

Made ten years after Slaughter's classic series of barnstorming, Victorian style 'bloodcurdlers', his utterly unique acting style: handrubbing, cackling, maniacal stares et al are all still present.
This occasionally stilted potboiler is certainly no classic and without Slaughter's compelling presence wouldn't be worth watching.

There is no-one anything like Slaughter in all cinema history and at his peak as Sweeney Todd Best Of British: Thriller [DVD], or starring in the excellent, The Face At The WindowA Face at the Window / The Crimes of Stephen Hawke/ It's Never too Late to Mend [DVD] his stylised, deliberately over the top, magnetic and occasionally hysterical performances are highly entertaining and a unique part of British cinema history.

As a big fan of M R James' ghost stories I was glad to be finally able to obtain this good quality modern hardback edition, with an informative and interesting introduction (my well thumbed old paperback was on its last legs).

Probably the greatest ghost story writer ever, as correctly evidenced by the reviews on here.
I would only add, and thoroughly recommend, these two excellent audio CDs read with subtlety and believability by David Collings: The Complete Ghost Stories of M. R. James - Volume 1The Complete Ghost Stories of M. R. James - Volume 2 (Craftsman Audio)
