5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Accessory, 11 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Looks good and feels solid in both portrait and landscape mode.

I bought this for £18 which is a fair price; you can get bits of plastic for under a fiver that are supposed to act as stands, but don't waste your time. A large phone needs a proper docking cradle. I bought this for bedside use, but I'm going to get another for the office.

Yes, it can't accommodate a Note with a case fitted, but there are so many different types of cases available it would probably have ended up looking like a monstrosity, with everything wobbling around. As it is, the standard phone fits it well.

So it doesn't come with a USB charging lead? I might have been slightly miffed at £40, but at £18 I really can't complain. I'll just use the existing USB charger I was using next to the bed, instead. No big drama.

Very pleased, overall.

** Update - you can also use this to charge a galaxy note 2, although the fit isn't perfect as the Note 2 is slightly narrower. If you add a "shell" type case, however, you can get quite a snug fit.

For example, search for "Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Solid Black Hybrid Rubberised Back Cover / Case / Shell / Shield + 6-in-1 Screen Protector Pack"

Very nice key action for the price, and the whole keyboard doesn't look cheap.

The multimedia & application buttons work, and aren't too obtrusive.

Great value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good player, but you MUST do this!, 29 Aug. 2011

Not a bad media player, but really let down by the supplied firmware. To push the potential of the hardware (especially the online features) you need to upgrade the firmware. This is a pretty simple process involving downloading a file to a blank flash drive and rebooting the player with the flash drive plugged in.

The official firmware upgrades give you some basic online functionality, but it's still quite limited in scope and flaky.

Search for "wellu firmware" - this is an unoffical firmware mod that adds Youtube, streaming movies and video podcasts and channels via Metafeeds (even some HD ones). Not everything online streams 100% (I suspect that some Quicktime or flash video may be giving problems?) but it really expands what the Oplay Air can do. I wonder why Asus didn't build in this sort of functionality in the first place..

..this drive is almost *too* small and light!

i.e. very easy to lose. Make sure you attach it to something.

Works well though, & seems quick enough.

Audio Commentaries feature George Kennedy on "The Court Martial" and Allan Melvin on "New Recruits." Both have good memories of working with Phil Silvers.

The Lost Audition Show (33:05) is the original pilot. The story is the same as "New Recruits." Jack Warden plays the role of Cpl. Henshaw that went to Allan Melvin. Warden's just a little too intense to be one of Bilko's henchmen. This was never aired on TV since the audition was shot with videocameras and captured on 16mm with a kinescope process. The camera work is rough and the print has scratches.

Original Network Openings (0:26) has the troops marching under the orders of Camel Cigarettes. Remember that smoking is bad for you.

Original Cast Commercials (2:38) has them pushing Camel cigarettes and the '59 Pontiac. The guys at Pontiac gave Phil a horn that matches his personality.

Lucy and the Efficiency Expert (25:28) is from the fifth season of The Lucy Show. Mr. Mooney (Gale Gordon) hires an efficiency expert (Phil Silvers) to transform his bank's workforce. Little does he suspect that Lucy will connect with Silvers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value For Money, 5 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good Points:
Motion detection has good sensitivity (senses a bit further than the spec) and takes clear images every few seconds.

Bad Points:
No time/date stamp
Battery life not very good (about 4 hours) so not so good for standalone/mains free use
Nowhere to store battery whilst in use - I had to use a bit of velcro to stick it to the rear of the unit.

Overall though, great for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Great Nuclear Misunderstanding Lasted 2 Minutes And 28 Seconds (including the peace treaty), 16 Jun. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Long overdue DVD & BR issue of this unique film. The BFI have done a wonderful job restoring the print - wouldn't it be great to see this in a cinema, too?

The plot seems just as insane as it ever was,(is it ever really possible to make a sane film about nuclear destruction?) and we are left to revel in the great cast performances, and the abundance of gags, both in the script and production design. There are wonderful little moments throughout, such as the shifty way Spike Milligan looks around just before he pockets a scrap he picks from a hole he is digging in the middle of the desolate remains of the M4 Slough turnoff. Fans of Milligan's "dalek" sketch will probably giggle when they note the eviscerated poodle skeleton in Roy Kinnear's car, too!

Out of the Frying Pan and into Der Fuhrer: Story of the Channel Islands' Kitchen Front of World War Two
Out of the Frying Pan and into Der Fuhrer: Story of the Channel Islands' Kitchen Front of World War Two
by Bryan Chalker
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Add Water And Zimmer For 20 Minutes!, 16 Jun. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Great slice of social History with a delicious filling of fascinating detail which illuminates this harrowing period.

Bryan Chalker clearly has an affection and mastery of the subject matter, and has assembled a wealth of contemporary photographs and ephemeral illustrations to complement the story.

He vividly conveys the sense of ingenuity and spirit which the Islanders experienced at the start of the occupation, and the sense of desperation and hunger felt by both the Islanders and the Germans, as the war dragged on and liberation was imminent.

The book concludes with a few local recipes from the era. I've never tasted turnip jam or bean marzipan, but I think I'll experiment over the next few weeks!
