This is a twisted tale of a best friend suicide which has far reaching impacts on the narrators life and relationships, as well as the fallout from a twisted love triangle. The book is a page turner but has problems. The translation is patchy in places and the main characters are hard to care about. Some of the actions of the characters are inconsistent and verge on the unbelievable. However the depictions of mental illness and its ramifications are insightful.

This is a decent book which covers beers from all around the world. Each beer has a very short review and tasting notes. There a few in depth articles on a selected number of breweries. I would have liked more detail on the breweries involved and more information on each beer, that said its a decent read and a reasonable guide to some unusual beers.

I have read the Border trilogy and was underwhelmed, but this is a superb book. Sparsely written and gripping, it is full of tension as we follow the consequences of a man choice. The narration by the Sheriff adds a melancholy to the novel, clearly echoing McCarthy's world weary views.
