1.0 out of 5 stars If you buy a small specialist dictionary you will find ..., 19 Nov. 2014

If you buy a small specialist dictionary you will find it usually contains definitions of between 5000 and 7000 terms. Some years ago I bought a dictionary of art..,well it is actually art and artists and contains 2500 entries. 90% of these are on artists which leaves about 250 definiions of art terms. I am not sure whether this is more or less than the average vocabulary of a two year old but it does suggest that conceptual development in the world of art has been rather slow over several centuries. This book, which is effectively a picture dictionary for students of art and design, offers nothing of any weight conceptually. Heaven help anyone who needs it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reader beware. Science is not always what it seems., 20 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like the psychology of thinking in the 1950's the psychology of art could be described as mainly the debris left behind by a number of hit and run theorists. Any book that attempts to integrate material in the field is thus welcome but I would have preferred a deeper and more critical treatment than this. Here it is a case of reader beware. There is a general problem of linking the psychology of perception to anything. As science goes it is mostly crap consisting mainly of theoretical games played in artificial contexts in the laboratory with little interest in what happens in normal vision. 'Change blindness' is an interesting phenomenon but basic questions have not been asked here and obvious variations in situations not examined (bad science). To happily use the results of change blindness as explanations of other effects, as the author does, is thus incautious. The Fourier analysis of pictures has also been linked to aesthetic judgements. Any mathematical analysis that yields positive results has some utility but, firsly no attempt has been made to assess the degree to which aesthetic judgements are not linked to Fourier results. (assessing the power of a variable is important). Fourier analysis only describes texture and not content of a picture. Secondly, there is no evidence the brain can carry out anything resembling a Fourier analysis for visual materials. At the moment what psychologists know about the recogition and judgements about textures could be written on the back of a postage stamp. The question that needs to be addressed is,'What kind of anaysis is the brain doing when viewing a texture?' Overall..some interest but disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and valuable for science as well as art, 13 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Most researchers in perception are buried in theoretical tunnels and have neither seen nor thought about reality for a long time. Worse, in most experiements in perception subjects are not even asked what they see. Some derived measure is used instead. If you want to find out what people see do not waste your time reading a general text book on perception. This book is beautifully different. A first class research worker with an interest in art has turned her mind to investigating what we see when we look at pictures. It thus links science with reality in a way that is sorely needed in perception. A number of different ideas, derived from research, are outlined and linked to what we see when viewing works of art. The writing is very clear but some of the ideas are a little complex and thus not easy to grasp. (Understanding Scientific American would make a good comparison). The book is beautifully presented with lots of illustrations and carefully selected works of art. Not an easy read for everyone but more than worth for those who can handle this material.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good history..shame about the reproductions, 18 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you are interested in the history of railway poster art this is an excellent and well researched book. However, my primary reason for purchase was an interest in styles of art and quite frankly the reproductions in this text are mostly too small and of insufficient quality to represent this style. This limitation is beautifully illustrated by comparing the sharp image on the front cover of the book with the poor and shrunken reproduction of the same picture just inside the cover which, unfortunately, is typical of most of the other illustrations throughout the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Use as a flood pump, 31 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was looking for a pump to remove flooding from my garden that could be fitted to an ordinary garden hose. The reason for this was that wider hose is expensive and I have a long way to pump the water..70 yards. Hozelock advised me that this pump fitted the bill. The flow rate through such a length of hose is not too great but the pump has been running continuously for a few days and is slowly but steadily shifting the water. An electrical switch on the pump would have been handy but for the price it is doing a good job. The input filter is easy to remove and clean. I removed the output filter to improve flow rate.

5.0 out of 5 stars does what it says on the tin, 27 Oct. 2012

There is really no need to review this watch...it is an excellent product at a very low price. It has a very visible display and keeps accurate time. For me there are three additional features that I appreciate. I still do a lot of sport so I like a watch that is both light and has a strap that is not badly affected by perspiration. I also do not like a watch with a strongly reflective casing because sooner or later it will reflect light into yours or somebody else's eyes. Perfect|

5.0 out of 5 stars colour and technique beautifully combined, 7 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The quality of this book did not come as a surprise since I have other books by the same painter. Hazel Soan's African Watercolours are some of her most outstanding paintings. Her use of colour is superb but it is really her ability to push watercolour technique about as far as it can go that is outstanding. It takes considerable skill to produce paintings like these and so it will take courage for anyone to try to copy their style but the effort is worthwhile. Buy this book and dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars powerful little sucker, 19 April 2012

Light and easy to use. Powerful and very good for cleaning in corners. It also does what we bought it for well, i.e. clean the inside of the car and no worries about battery life.

1.0 out of 5 stars lovely colour effects shame about the pouring, 9 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The kettle heats the water rapidly and the jug is easy to handle and lift. The blue lighting when switched on is a harmless trimming. The pouring through the filter is both slow and erratic and, if we had known how bad this was, we would never have purchesed the product. I cannot understand how an established company can produce such a deficient product in this respect.

4.0 out of 5 stars The history behind the picture, 2 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Masterpieces in Detail (Hardcover)
There is no introduction to clarify the ambiguity in the title. Both volumes go
straight into the sections about each picture. Reading these it turns out that the book is about the history connected to the content of the pictures and not about the styles and techniques employed within them, which, not knowing much about art history was the kind of information I was seeking. Each section deals with a single painting and is entirely independent which means you can dip into the book at any point that interests you. I have dipped into numerous sections and found them both beautifully written and extremely interesting. So much so that in some sections it was not until afterwards that I realised that much of what I had read was not really relevant to the picture being presented. The only technical fault I spotted unfortunately happened in the first section. The authors' statement that the egyptians could not make perspective drawings (in the sense being used by the authors) is incorrect. It is a feature of the male figure being discussed but practically all the other (animal) figures in the picture are very good perspective drawings. It is a common feature in writing about art to make general statements without checking enough examples to see whether they are, in fact, correct or not.Masterpieces in Detail
