As someone who has read all of his books, bar the autobiography, I think this is one of the best and yet I didn't find it anywhere near as funny as the others. It is a story about relationships and how they change when an unexpected event occurs. Perhaps it is because I am a fan of Graham Greene, particularly The End of the Affair, which like Greene is riddled with lapsed catholic guilt. I am not catholic but I comprehend the guilt in this novel. Rest assured there are many very funny moments and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Have a tissue handy though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Never comes the day.., 13 Oct. 2013

This was the first moody Blues album I bought on vinyl and I played it to death. Having recently bought EGBDF on CD I thought the time had come to dream again. Justin Hayward, one of the rare good things to emanate from Swindon, has such a great voice and never comes the day is worth the price of the whole album. Some pretentious philosophy to gloss over but its a triumph for the Mellotron played by Mike Pinder and of course the third of their concept albums.

3.0 out of 5 stars More like a Tom Sharpe novel, 13 Oct. 2013

Having read many of his books and enjoyed Reggie Perrin I cant say I think this is great or super! Its funny but too far fetched like some of the sillier Tom Sharpe novels.
I found all of the Pratt books very funny, Going Gently fantastic and It Had To Be You both very funny but also very sad but brilliantly written. they cant all be gems and this one isnt in my humble opinion.

I heard Jon on Radio 5 talking to Richard Bacon and looked this up. Well worth reading if you are starting your career so you can spot the evil leaders in the organisation who have a lot of the traits outlined in this book. It might help your decision making if you are aware who you are up against!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hitchens: the World is a poorer place without him, 29 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recall seeing Christopher Hitchens on TV and in the short air-time anyone gets to debate anything he did come across as opinionated and a shade outrageous but having read this collection of wonderful books I cannot believe there are many if any writers who are so well read and in a position to speak so authoritatively. Maybe I am influenced by a shared admiration for George Orwell but I cannot wait to read all of his other works. The man was a genius of his time and a great loss to mankind. He cuts through the myths and fables of religion and his essays are a delight to read on a wide range of issues, writers and politicians and reviews books about them which normally I wouldn't read. Despite his criticisms of others and their works he does seem to have enjoyed life and not become a depressed old bore like so many writers. Reading this makes you wonder why so many stupid people are voted into power and how the populations are so ignorant themselves to be taken in and led by politicians and religious leaders whose only real interest is personal power. maybe that is me being cynical? If you want to be stimulated buy these and begin to think for your self.

I saw The Cure play this song live (on TV) on one of those Live Aid gigs, in Paris. Tracked it down (!) to this album and its the best 89p I have spent in years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voyage of discovery, 15 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this book on kindle in less than 24 hours whilst on holiday in Sicily recently. Anyone interested in researching family history, particularly with military connections, will find this book fascinating and instructive. It is both a voyage of discovery about his father's military life and the unexpected discovery that he had a completely unknown and separate family. Well researched and objectively written I feel its a great shame the two families couldn't have spent more time together earlier in their lives. But perhaps without the key secret and the surrounding mystery there would not have been a story or even the need for the research and discovery. The author proves he too is a quiet authority.
