I bought this DVD for my mother to replace her worn out video version. She loves it and will not consider any other production. I think that says it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life turned upside down, 18 April 2011
This review is from: Moon in Leo (Paperback)
This is a gripping read. I like history served up through a story and this book certainly delivered on that score. Set in the post Tudor period of great civil upheaval, this book dwells on the effects of the time on a wide cross section of society. The characters within that society are three dimensional, utterly convincing and interesting. Nothing is as it seems. Through the eyes of the heroine Rosamund we discover the many layers of character that lie below the initial first impression. Like the shifting and dangerous sands of the area in which the book is set, events change, menace, threaten and uplift. Even when the heroine marks time waiting for the next move, there is no lack of excitement, even stillness is shrouded with tension. The quote repeated in the novel from Hermetic philosophy "As above, so below" sums up the story as the heroine's world is turned upside down, ending where it began.

I really enjoy looking at this book - the sheep just make me smile. They become more animated as Moore sees them as individuals. As a sculptor he draws them with great form, you can almost feel the mass of the bodies. Most encouraging for other artists is the way in which these sketches show a progression in drawing quality - even great artist improve with practise! Moore uses the simplest of materials - mostly ball point pens - proving that good art does not necessarily require elaborate or expensive equipment. A book to treasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Right Of Passage, 18 Feb. 2010

For anyone interested in life on a corvette and in the fleet air-arm during world war 2 this book is a must. it is written with some humour, telling the story of one man's experience of growing up through the experience and shock of war. There are some heart warming passages about the goodness of many people whom the author meets, as well as many sobering moments when the losses caused by war are described. My only criticism is that the author sometimes appears a little too good

The Lost Art Of Gratitude (Isabel Dalhousie 6)

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A light, digestible and very satisfying read, 18 Feb. 2010
I've just finished reading this book and found it as enjoyable as all the previous books in this series. It is well written with some exquisite passages - particularly those in which the heroine enjoys those simple moments when nature delights her. I like the way the everyday - and not so everyday dilemmas are wrestled with, the complexity of human behaviour and the chill of an Edinburgh summer evening. Alexander Mc Call Smith delivers a very digestible novel on a par with the delectable food he describes
