4.0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to my library, 8 Nov 2012

This box set is well worth adding to your collection. It provides a timely reminder of the diverse nature of the wrting of Debussy whilst underlining the fact that some of his orchestral work has been orchestrated by others. The performances are carefully managed and whilst, I am sure, you will find individual recordings of greater merit, this set has a sense of consistency and quality. The packaging is ok but I did enjoy the notes which put each work into some sort of context. Overall a real bargain that reintroduced me to works that need and deserve listening to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent second meeting with Bruno, 21 May 2012

S.J.Parris has made excellent use of the real Giordano Bruno to create a character that possess all the skills needed in a hero but with all the human weaknesses of someone who allows the novel to twist and turn. The period of history is a complex one and whilst some licence is taken it does not detract from the pace and enjoyable nature of the read. If you are only looking for total historical accuracy then I am sure you will spend time tutting and reaching for reference books. The author creates a rich period background within which she moves the characters with precision and skill creating and novel that demands you stay the course. This is an excellent second outing for Bruno and I as a reader will be sending for the third very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 11 Mar 2012

As someone who has listened to the most popular Mahler works it was with a true sense of expectation as I ventured to tackle the entire output of this composer. The performances spread across 6 decades and include some magical performances both vocal and orchestral. I am sure the purists will champion other specific reditions of particular symphonies but the ones chosen for this set are truely great examples and provide a real sense of the musical and emotional development contained within Mahler's music. The vocal performances are epic and whilst a novice listener might be concerned over some of the dates of recording voices like Dictrich Fischer-Dieskau, Kathleen Ferrier and Janet Baker should not be missed. As a whole the choices do mean that the tonal quality changes and perhaps there is a mixed sense of interpretation however, the whole is much greater than the sum of it's parts. This collection is excellent on so many levels and I would recommend it to anyone.

In an era where moderate singers become household names through the power of the radio, espcially the light weight classical channels, It is nice to spend time listening to a voice of real quality. Cecila Bartoli is arguably one of the finest opera singers around. Her diction, sense of drama, willingness and ability to draw the listener in with her tonal range, her exquisite sense of melodic line all show her to be at the very top of the tree. This album is a selecttion of varied show pieces from across a number of musical periods. Cecilia Bartoli shows that she can meet the period, style and artistic task head on and create some magical moments. Whilst not an album exploring a particular composer or era in depth it is a must for anyone who just wants to hear singing of exceptional quality.

A book that rightly deserves the Man Booker award. Absolutely compelling reading from first to last, a true masterpiece that will pass the test of time. It draws the reader in through the clear focus of the writing and instant relationships that are built between the reader and the characters. A book that, whilst short, is no light weight in message, a must read.
