The House at Sunset (The Suffolk Trilogy Vol 3) (Suffolk House Trilogy 3)
The House at Sunset (The Suffolk Trilogy Vol 3) (Suffolk House Trilogy 3)
by Norah Lofts
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars The house at Sunset., 7 Nov 2011

I found, as I did with all three books, that with each character, there was insufficient detail, comment from the character and time spent with each character for any empathy or interest to build. It also skipped from one character to another so quickly that it was really confusing trying to remember the chronological order of the story characters and thier relationships to one another. Compared to say, Phillippa Gregory's trilogy it comes a very poor second.

This review is from: Sashenka (Paperback)
Sashenka !!!!!! What a fabulous story....based on fact, a dreadful tale of the terrors of living in Russia during the revolution and counter revolutions, never being sure who is on which side.........there have to be many more such stories amongst the archives and I hope they get reported. However, why is it that, although excellently written by Simon Montifiorre, and I am a fan, the female 'finer feelings' do not come through ? Had this been written by a woman, it would most likely not have been so gritty, but the loss of Sashenkas children was very underplayed....a truly heartbreaking, tearladen read had it been written by say Phillipa Gregory. I felt almost annoyed with her that she didnt convey any passion throughout the whole of the story. Sorry Simon, you are a man after all and cannot possibly experience the emotions towards her children which a mother feels...That is my only critiscm and I still loved your book and shiver as I remember the hose pipe turning her into an ice-maiden.
Find another case and write about it...but get a real woman to articulate the womans emotions as you write.

A really gripping story of slavery, abuse by the landowners and intricate family linkage, revenge and inhumanity. The script is easy to read and easy to follow unlike some similar stories and you really get involved with the characters.
A great read.
