5.0 out of 5 stars "T.V." could hardly get any better than this!, 22 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I truly respect Michael Portillo and his production team! ALL of his documentaries thus far are just TOP RATE "Entertainment" and I would not want anything less than this in front of me when I turn on MY "TV". I think this is reason that "T.V."s were actually invented for THIS kind of "television". Just perfect.!....I .highly recommend this!

Too bad there are no subtitles so you can turn down the Dolly Parton , Etc. Soundtrack music

As it is completely ruined by such awful soundtrack music and editing nearly that makes you just wish at least they would put sub titles in this documentary so you can turn down the sound and enjoy "nature" instead of USA style of "t.v".

5.0 out of 5 stars When is Series 3 Coming Out?!, 8 May 2014

I love Michael Portillo and the producers of his railway series! He really has found his niche as host of this great idea of a "railway series" throughout Britain and now Europe. Perfect personality to host such a great idea for a series. Relax and unwind from your ordinary , mundane , dreary "world" to see other places in this world without having to do anything but press the remote and have a intelligent host as Michael Portillo be your guide. (I know it might sound lonely to the unknowing,,but I am sure after most will not be disappointed with such a great host and series as one will see here!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Quick Overview of the World's Entire Recorded History, 5 Feb 2014
This review is from: A History of the World (Paperback)
It is okay for just a quick outline of general understanding of history..yet..i think it obviously leaves out a lot and is not really something to stop at as far as research goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Ideas for a TV/Documentary Series Yet, 2 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Absolutely love this documentary series and hope they continue. The series combines very interesting documentary with interviews of many very interesting British people during Michael Portillo's "Victorian themed" train travels through the variety of the many British (& Irish) towns, cities, and regions. One can see & learn about the different people , places & things of modern day Britain and to see (often through old documentary film ) how they have changed or stayed the same since 100 years or so ago and even (via interviews ,photos, art work or present day buildings & models) how they were like and how they evolved since as long as 170-200 years or so ago at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution & the Victorian Age. As well, another thing that really makes this series a great idea, is one is able to virtually travel around and see Britain & Ireland(certainly for a very small fraction of the cost to actually do so) while having a series of very in depth guided tours of things one might not ever think to visit and to ask questions and engage in conversation with people one would usually be unknowing of as well as too inhibited to talk to or actually unable/prohibited to talk to. I also certainly think the British ex-politician , Michael Portillo, really is the perfect choice to host this particular documentary series as he makes everyone and thing along his journeys seem interesting by his way of interaction with them. (I think due to his obvious intelligence and keen interest in the subject as well as his lively, engaging , and unique personality.)

** I would like to add that I have watched Michael Portillo's "Great Continental Railway Journeys Series 1" and am anxiously waiting for part 2 of this documentary series to come out and that this series certainly seems every bit as good and interesting as the British railway journeys..except covers continental Europe.

Hitler
Hitler
by Ian Kershaw
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written & Interesting, 3 Aug 2013
This review is from: Hitler (Paperback)
Compared to other books on Hitler & the Nazis..I would have to rate this among the best ones I have read or tried to read. The author does seem to write very well and in interesting detail.

I did take 1 star off due to the author's not questioning some of the stories or historical "facts" that are still yet to be proven or even seem to be proven not ( at least very unlikely) to be true.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Interesting..yet kind of "a fun movie version of British history", 29 July 2013

This review is from: The British [DVD] (DVD)
too "movie like" and not as serious and academic effort like I had hoped for. I don't think I would even consider it a "documentary"...really more like "a fun movie version of British history". Yet is better than nothing at all.

too "movie like" and not as serious and academic effort like I had hoped for. I don't think I would even consider it a "documentary"...really more like "a fun movie version of history". Although, It is interesting to see how some of the people in history might have dressed...I think the producers should have concentrated more on filming actual sites and artifacts of the history and left out the Hollywood acting.(as this is what really kind of spoiled it for me). Also, I agree with another reviewer who mentioned this "documentary" seems a bit "too P.C." , as it seems to focus sometimes on stories of history that seem kind of irrelevant in the large scope of things.(Example: The quite long segment of the woman taken slave by the Romans named "Perpetua")..to target a selected group of P.C. reviewers maybe?

Btw, I DO like Andrew Marr as a presenter...and have his other documentaries and he was great in them and very much enjoyed the content in them...and I don't think this documentaries content was his fault.

....In just under 7 hours , it shows beautiful scenery, art and artefacts relating to the full length of Britain's very long history all the way back to the Romans to modern times. I enjoyed it and am glad it was produced.
