Tough love, tough parenting ... but perhaps what is required in this age?, 27 Jan 2011
No doubt about it, Amy Chua is a tough mother. Indeed, she proudly calls herself tiger mother and she rules the educational aspects of their children's lives with an iron fist. Indeed, some of her actions may even be considered child abuse ...
Or so I initially thought.
But then, a week after reading this book, I reflected some more.
Indeed, could the real child abuse consist in NOT spending so much time and investing in their education as Amy Chua? We live in a hypercompetitive environment where education matters alot. Is it not a form of child abuse to not adequately prepare them for such a world?
I was not able to arrive at any firm conclusions for myself. However, the book really provoked a lot of reflection and thought in the process, and it inspired me to learn more about Asian values and cultures. I also got the book TIGER MOTHER, DRAGON FATHER (Special Kindle Edition) Confucian Classic Secrets for Raising Disciplined, Respectful and Happy Children (Asian Secrets for Raising Children)
which was very helpful in understanding the Confucian basis for many such practices.
