Used this on holiday travelling in a camper in France, where we wouldn't have access to mains electricity. It was very useful and worked as advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars fun retelling of bible stories, 17 July 2013
It's a shame that people who are dissatisfied with the physical state of the books they have bought have pulled down the rating for this book.

The bible stories are re-told in a very accessible and funny way. They can either be read to yourself or read out loud and they suit all ages. I've just been re-reading the story of Elijah being part of bringing a drought to an end while King Ahab is sitting eating a picnic and gets to the toothpick stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and enjoyable, 11 May 2013

Many Regency romances have suggestions of eloping to Gretna Green, none of them take us there with a stage by stage description of the route. That might sound dull, but Carola Dunn enlivens the journey with a wonderful comedy of manners; a kitten always getting into trouble, a bible quoting chaperone and a clear mismatch between the pair of couples.
She clearly knows her route and methods of travelling, but doesn't turn this into a lecture. I was pleased to find I knew every place where they stopped to change horses from Stamford onwards, so could follow their route and visualise most of the inns in my mind's eye.
I'll definitely be buying the next in the trilogy, although each book is stand alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and enjoyable, 2 May 2013

I came to this as I enjoy the Daisy Dalrymple books. I was not disappointed. Likeable characters, witty conversations and melodrama turned wonderfully on its head.
I look forward to reading others in the series

3.0 out of 5 stars Ambivalent about this. Contains spoiler, 23 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed the first two books of this series and felt they had interesting plots and character development, but was unhappy about this last book. As we learn in book two there is to be blight on the world in a short time. Essentially this is to be the equivalent of the biblical flood with only the righteous surviving.
What concerned me was that I saw little sign of their righteousness or that of the Medium which guides them.
It is clear from the first book that only those who are from Families generally have the opportunity to learn about the Medium and become Mastons. We see no sign of the Mastons teaching others or leading by example. Foundlings, called Wretcheds, are brought up and learn a trade, but not given any guidance, so seem to have to find their moral grounding themselves. Shouldn't the Medium have been doing more to ensure that they had some chance not to fall to the Blight?
In addition there is the question of Hillel, a nice girl, who is a bit shy, but shows no sign of wickedness. In order to allow its misdirection to succeed the Medium arranges for her to go somewhere where it is quite clear from Lia's own struggles that Hillel had no chance of resisting being turned by the forces of evil. She is a puppet and given no chance of redemption.
The Blight itself is horrendous and as it will affect all except those who have been saved, even children will succumb to it. (In fact there is an earlier horrible passage where people including children die a very nasty death, but Lia looked round the group beforehand and thought to herself that they were in that situation because of stubborness rather than belief in the Medium)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ivan you idiot matures, 17 Dec 2012
I was sorry not to have seen any more of Ivan in the last two books as he was developing into an interesting character in his own right. Cryoburn had seemed to be very much the conclusion of the series, so it was with a skip of joy that I saw a hard back copy of this book on sale.
I knew I'd buy the paperback when it comes out, but couldn't wait for that, so downloaded the audio book as soon as I was home. I was not disappointed.
Ivan has grown up, but not grown boring. He shows a Vor sense of honour which leads him into all sorts of complications, but as might be expected wins through in the end with Bujold's usual witty style.

Checkmate (Lymond Chronicles)
Checkmate (Lymond Chronicles)
by Dorothy Dunnett
Edition: Paperback
Price: 22.99

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful read, 5 Aug 2011
I've just finished re-reading the Lymond series in one glorious splurge. It's certainly easier to keep information straight in your head that way than my first read through which had months or years between books.
They couldn't be called an easy read, as you have to concentrate, but they're most definitely not dull. Her skill with words is enviable.
I can't understand why she isn't better known compared with much more simplistic historical novelists.

For any one who has not read the rest of the series, do not start here, but once you do start you'll find this a very worth while final book.

4.0 out of 5 stars very practical, 1 Aug 2011

so many surge extension leads don't allow space for the larger plugs. As this tower has the row of plugs on either side, rather than head to head it's much more useful

4.0 out of 5 stars to the lady in Boyes - this is the book I recommended, 29 May 2011
A very useful practical book. It has helped me get going from a standing start of not knowing how to crochet to starting a waistcoat.
I did use a separte online tutorial too, but this gives clear instructions and tells you how to read a pattern, which I was finding difficult as they seem to bear no resemblance to knitting patterns

3.0 out of 5 stars quite enjoyable, 25 Nov 2010

This wasn't as poor as I'd feared from the previous review. In fact I enjoyed it more than Richard and the Golden Horseshoe. The story is fairly slight, without the high drama of the earlier books, and the children do seem much more naive and less capable than the earlier generation (if not downright dim about the fact that they discover early on in the book that someone is stockpiling hand grenades). On the other hand we do see quite a lot of interchange between the Stormy Petrel and Anastasia, which I enjoyed.
