5.0 out of 5 stars Frothy Zola!, 11 Feb 2014

This review is from: Nana (Kindle Edition)
Having read Zola in my early twenties I remembered his work as intense, serious, depressing and a bit sick! (gripping nevertheless). Well, what a surprise Nana was. First up its written in a very jolly, frothy style, despite the bleak subject matter. It may be the translation has lightened the tone, who knows, but this is a totally engaging, ripping yarn about the rise and fall of a beautiful courtesan in Paris in the 1870s. It must have seemed wildly immoral at the time, but gather Zola was having a swipe at the second empire of which he disapproved. There are wonderful descriptive scenes of Parisian night life shimmering under the gaslight. Simply wonderful. .

Its not just the current advert using Oh What a Beautiful Morning that made me order this, its because its wonderful sing along stuff, and also chucklesome in the now shockingly titled song 'Im just a girl that can't say no!' Guaranteed to cheer you up on any wet, or grey day and make you feel wonderful if its spring or summer.

Ian McEwan is one of my favourite writers, ever since reading the Cement Garden, I have loved his dense, perfect prose, his masterful handling of his material and the subject matter he has explored rigorously in the most subtle manner. I failed to find this book interesting, and though it is once again written with his breathtaking skill, I found it dull. Perhaps its sad that issues at the dawn of the so called sexual revolution seem dull or maybe this should be a short story because there is not enough to pad out a novella.

The New Uxbridge is totally hilarious, full of inventive uses of the English language, don't read while traveling on public transport as you will find yourself LOLing and being stared at! One of the many great things about this book is that you can re-read it again and again and still find yourself convulsed with laughter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A vigorous read, 7 July 2013

I loved the intricate structure of the book, the interweaving of the characters stories and its breath-taking dealing with many urgent contemporary issues in a very natural way. The prose is crisp and fresh. Patrick Gale tells a rollicking story and his characters are utterly absorbing. The issue of faith is handled subtly and though I am an atheist it posed no problems. I look forward to more from him.

A heart-warming tale of the power of love to reconcile naked ambition. Easy reading, with moments of soap opera style plotting but saved by well rounded characters and very believable dialogue. Let's hope Ben's work appears as TV Drama as it would be well suited. He loves to tell a good yarn!

Caitlin rocks! This book is a rivetting, highly amusing, searing, truthful look at the state of womens' lives. It is both wickedly funny and deadly serious yet, never preachy or moralising. Its an autobiography that in its telling examines the often ridiculous dilemas that modern women face, the chapter on underwear is simply hilarious, but as the book progresses to marriage, childbirth, plastic surgery and lifestyle choices it gets even funnier. Read it and LOL while your partner demands in exasperation, 'what exactly are you reading.' A hugely intelligent read.
