4.0 out of 5 stars No bad at all., 17 Feb. 2014
I was not expecting much when i bought this harmonica. However as an entry level chromatic it seems fine. It is in tune and was ready to play on arrival. I did not need to adjust any of the reeds. The volume is fairly quiet but is adequate for lone practice. There are no valves which means easy maintenance. Requires a little more wind but no problem if you have healthy lungs. Slide 'button' works smoothly. Instrument is not too large to cup. It lies comfortable in the hand. The range (starting C4 'middle C') is not overly restrictive although sometimes I have wished that it could get just a little lower to the B. I note that the price has reduced from £26 to just £19. At this price it is a very good buy indeed. Great for learning the basics.

I would recommend this to any beginner or to anyone more experienced requiring another instrument for travel or for practice. I am happy with my purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic runes., 11 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These runes are adequate for their purpose. The wood has been stained fairly darkly which you may or may not not like. The engraving is shallow and the printing of the symbols a bit patchy/blotchy. The Ingus is the double cross rather than the square on point. They do not supply you with both designs. They do however supply you with the needless blank so called 'odin' rune which you can use for any purpose of your choosing. All the symbols (apart from the ingus) are accurate for the Elder 'Germanic' Futhark runes with the posible exception of the Sowilo which has a flat middle line to the 'bolt' rather than a diagonal as was the historical original. However this is admittedly being overly picky. Use a black sharpie pen to embolden some of the symbols and you will end up with an acceptable set of runes that are a step upwards from those horrible ceramic and even more horrible glass runes :) 6 out of 10.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very profound book of insight., 31 Dec. 2012
I have read literally hundreds of 'books of wisdom'. There are a few authors to whom I come back to again and again. Books such as 'The Prophet' by Kahlil Gibran and the 'Tao Te Ching'(Stephen Mitchell version) by Lao Tzu resonate. Ken Wilbur's 'Sex, Ecology and spirituality' is another fine book and is recommended to you.

Dr Paul Brunton is yet another author who understands deeply from personal spiritual experience the deepest truths. As well as this book another book of his 'The Wisdom of the Overself' is likewise recommended to you.

With these five books in your library there really is no need to read any more. You will have the necessary intellectual clarity to then concentrate on your meditation practice and in your practice of 'loving kindness'. These are the three pillars of any spiritual practice.

I highly recommend this book -the sixteenth notebook of Dr Paul Brunton.- It is a diamond in the coal.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exceptional book., 4 Feb. 2011
There are certain books that rise above all the others. For example think of the 'Tao Te Ching' by Lao Tsu (Stephen Mitchell translation) or 'The Prophet' by Kahlil Gibran. Or perhaps the Buddhist 'Heart Sutra'?

'The Wholeness of Life' by Jiddu krishnamurti and 'No Boundaries' by Ken Wilber also merit a honourable mention.

This book provides you with every essential piece of the intellectual jigsaw from which all others may then be intuited and it is clear to me that Dr Brunton could not have written this book without a degree of personal spiritual experience.

The content of the book is very profound and yet the style of the writing is not laborious. Dr Brunton is able to communicate to others clearly which makes his ideas accessible to the average intellect. I thus highly recommend this book.It is one of the cream of the crop.

Teach Yourself Beginner's Japanese Script New Edition (TYBS)
Teach Yourself Beginner's Japanese Script New Edition (TYBS)
by Helen Gilhooly
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended to you all., 27 Sept. 2010
This book has been well thought out. The units contain many exercises that drive the information deep into your memory. The book is also importantly fun to study.Stories are used to aid in the learning of the kanji and the two kanas are presented very skilfully.

The only reason the book does not receive all five stars is that the size of the kanji characters are too small and at times are hard to read. This is a basic mistake that the author should have rectified from the oft. Nevertheless there is no denying that this is a clearly presented and in depth introduction to the subject of both reading and writing Japanese. Recommended to you all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised., 16 Sept. 2010
This review is from: CHINESE CHARACTERS (Paperback)
Reasonably priced considering how much useful information there is held in this book. Not only does it assist you to memorise over 2178 characters but it importantly includes by rank the 2000 most popular characters in the language.

Statistically this means that after completing your study you will be able to understand 96.5 % of any modern Chinese text and will be able in many cases to piece together the intuitive meanings of compound words. The author has made the venture doable and even enjoyable.

The characters themselves are in large print and are clearly and methodically presented with not only the English meaning but with also with their pinyin pronunciation. There are various indices in the back of the book so that you can cross reference either from the pinyin or the English meaning. The author presents memory stories/aids for all 2000+ characters and not just the first few hundred.

I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to memorise Chinese characters through brute force. This new approach has worked for me. Expect to cover a section a day of the 91 section book. This means learning 25 new characters a day with 60 minutes daily study leading to the completion of the book in just three months.I have tried covering the sections more quickly but have found it too much memory wise for my poor brain to take in.However you might do better. Anyway good luck in your study of the Chinese language.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best tarot deck out there, 7 April 2009
The characters are so naturally expressive that it is simple to use this deck. The representation of nature in these cards is also absolutely wonderful. I would unreservedly recommend this deck. The book that accompanied the deck was also comprehensive and clear to understand. An almost perfect package (I never give 5 stars as I grade conservatively but this deck would come close!)

2.0 out of 5 stars Beware, 7 April 2009
When I received the goods I found that the pole was broken at the end of the handle and even more crucially at the joint of the head. I have applied super glue to both parts and I am hoping that it will be useable. May have to reinforce at the joint with gaffer tape if the weight of the head does not hold solely with the glue. The item had clearly not been checked prior to it being wrapped up.

However the poles do seem to hold when extended out and they are made of aluminium rather than plastic which should make them fairly robust when fully extended. We shall see. Thus the two stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Open hearted clear minded advice., 24 July 2007
I thought that this was a most useful book. It will encourage and warm the heart. To do full justice to yourself (and to the book) you do however need to have a daily meditation practice. Read it again and again and things will come to you from different angles. The only weakness to this book will be your projections. With love Andy.
