5.0 out of 5 stars The western that actually deserved an oscar., 14 April 2008
Many films are unappreciated in their time, only to be looked upon in years to come as masterpiece. My prediction is that this is one such film.

The best film of last year, beyond any shadow of a doubt.

As a huge Woody Allen fan i can confirm that this is his worst effort by a long shot, the only funny sequence in the entire film occuring during the closing credits when Woody himself shows up.

Despite his role in the proceedings it is not truly a 'Woody Allen film' in any respect and only worth watching to say that you've seen it.

Unfortunately there are not intermittent points in between the star ratings as i don't feel this film is as bad as a two star film, yet it it really isn't worthy of three stars. As a result, two it will have to be.

The problem with the film is that it really just doesn't have a lot going on. Whereas some comedies are bad because they are so poorly constructed ('Atttack of the Killer Tomatoes' for instance) some are just not that great because, well they aren't funny enough. This film falls into the second category unfortunately, you don't feel offended after you've watched it, but you don't feel especially affected by it at all either.

You'd be better off watching any of the actors in their various other comedic roles (well except Brendan Fraser, his films are always pretty poor).

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart of Darkness, 14 Dec. 2007
This film is always likened to 'Apocalypse Now' and Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'. However it is unfortunately not as good as either.

Don't get me wrong it is still very good, a lot better than average, it just has always seemed to me that people treat the 'making of' stories as though they were at all a part of the film. Yes filming in the amazon was a fantastic feat and Kinski caused quite a bit of furore on set, however the obstacles encountered in production do not judge how good a film is ('Plan 9 From Outer Space' was plagued by porblems as well remember, and that isn't too fantastic is it?). The narrative really has little going on outside of them travelling down a river with, unlike 'Heart of Darkness', no real or satisfying ending or purpose.

It's worth watching though for Kinskis performance and for you to marvel at their surroundings and think 'wow, they really did this?' or if you are a fan of Herzog's other (and in my opinion better) films Fitzcarraldo and stroszek.

4.0 out of 5 stars Camerons second best., 14 Dec. 2007
Of course i mean 'Aliens' to be the first, but this doesn't fall too far behind.

I mean, yeah sure it's melodramatic as hell and the message it carries is about as subtle as being slapped in the face but it is hugely entertaining, the special effects are fantastic even by todays standard and its entertaining as hell. Should be a lot more popular than it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's actually pretty good, 14 Dec. 2007

I've never been a fan of the horror genre, especially in its recent years, so i didn't approach this film with high hopes. I was actually pleasantly surprised, the low budget DV look the film has really does it a great service giving post-apocalyptic London a great sense of atmosphere.

Upon first viewing the final act of the film really grated on me, but watching it again i foudn it to be one of the most enjoyable sections of the film and the one that really does distinguish it from the other horror films of today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spike's best?, 14 Dec. 2007
This review is from: The 25th Hour [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Being a much more subtle and mature film than 'Do the Right Thing' the above statement may actually be true. A fantastic film that doesn't have a grand plot but holds your interest through making the character and their friendship wholly believable.

This all happens without ever asking you to sympathise with the lead character, but instead asking you to examine the effect his actions have had on those around him, from the drug addict, to his girlfriend (played by Rosario Dawson who is on top form). In all a great film, go watch it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat flawed but all together good., 14 Dec. 2007
This review is from: 21 Grams [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
In Alejandro González Iñárritu's debut feature 'Amores Perros', the flaw was that the three stories didn't play out concurrently. As a result the elements of the film you found most interesting weren't found throughout, the characters you were most invested with appeared and disappeared with plenty of story either side of them still to fill.

With '21 Grams' Alejandro González Iñárritu seems to be attempting to combat this by constantly cutting between the three stories, jumping back and forth through different points in the story. As a result we are already shown the ending of many of the stories plots before we've even been given the foundations. For example- When Sean Penn heads out to kill Benicio Del Toro, we are already well aware that he doesn't go through with it - because we've already seen what happens afterwards.

Despite this flaw however the camera work is great, the performances are some of the best of their best respective persons have ever committed, and the story, script and characters are all very believable and deep.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a shame, 14 Dec. 2007
This review is from: 13 Tzameti [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
The concept of this film is brilliant, and the black and white cinematography is great. However all suspense is ruined simply by the fact that the story only invests in once character, so it wouldn't take a genius to guess who is going to come out of this thing alive.

It could've been greatly improved by following the stories of all the contestants, showing how and why they are there, that way it would have been a bit more gripping.
