4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job., 24 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This handy little sliding bracket is lightweight, sturdy and fits the stem of my bike well, using the two zip ties provided to keep it tight. Use a bit of inner tube between the bracket and the stem to create enough grip to stop it sliding round. Once mounted, the GPS device (in my case, an Oregon 450) sits firmly on the stem. The device slides into the bracket and stays seated with a re-assuring click. However, for added peace of mind, try adding a loop/velcro strap of some sort through the lanyard hole on the base of the device and tightly wrap this around the stem just in case the device works itself loose (i.e. you don't check its position after every ride).

Update: I've bought another one for my mtb as the one on my road bike has done a great job, so much so it has never fallen out, including on 6+ hour audaxes over pretty rough terrain. I wonder whether the reviewers who gave this item one star had the gps clipped in properly. This item appears to be identical to the ones sold elsewhere for 3x the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little belter, 30 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The bluetooth version of this recently scored highly on the gadget show. This little fella isn't blue-toothed but it's still a serious contender for mini speaker with the biggest personality. It packs small - slightly bigger than a golf ball - and comes with a drawstring cloth bag to keep the speaker clean. It really is quite a nice little no-fuss compact speaker.

Although the picture shows the jack, this in fact neatly fits into the base of the unit when not in use. There's plenty of volume and when you unscrew the two 'ends' of the speaker, it expands to about 8 cm long to form a mini sub-woofer - put your hand over the speak and you can actually feel the base pounding out of it. In addition, you can also use the volume control on your music device.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful parody of client-designer relationship, 30 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this while studying for my Landscape Architecture chartership. I found that it was a useful parody of a potential client-designer relationship and one which was easier to understand than the dry technical study guides. I haven't given it the full five because, even though there is an acknowledgement that the book is out of date, it could none-the-less do with a new version to introduce more prevalent themes.

Taking on the World
Taking on the World

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure adrenalin thrill., 30 Nov. 2012

This review is from: Taking on the World (Paperback)
A brilliant book, thoughtfully written and the passion to succeed shines through. I don't sail, never have done and have no particular interest in it. But underlying MacArthur's book about sailing is adventure writing - great for sofa thrillseekers. For that reason - and knowing that I would never experience what Ms MacArthur has - I wanted to step away from my comfort zone and read this. I practically had sea sickness just reading some parts of it - and the photos are usefully complement the words, reflecting the raw, gripping nature of competitive sailing or the majestic sailing idyl or the strong family influence which it seems carried her through some very tough times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful screen cover, 30 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These micro-thin plastic covers arrived in a fold-over cardboard pack. Unfortunately the pack can't be sealed so the remaining covers will need to be stored in a separate envelope. It's not a big deal - but it would just be a useful way of re-using the packaging the covers come in.

The covers themselves are fiddly to fit and I found it difficult to get the air pockets out (my camera was brand new, straight out the box). I wasted the first cover trying to get the air pockets out, by removing and trying to re-lay it and then eventually it seemed to lose whatever coating it had that makes it stick (it's not sticky per se - there's no residue, so removing it doesn't affect the LCD screen). With the second cover I managed to tease almost all air pockets out, leaving two tiny air pockets which refused to shift - possibly dust particles. However, when I switched on the LCD panel, the bubbles weren't visible and they haven't affected the functionality of the touch screen which I've since used quite a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robust., 28 July 2012

The otterbox looks quite bulky but the phone fits in snugly. The casing is a soft rubber which makes it very grippy. All the buttons and ports are accessible via flexible covers which fold back when not needed. The plastic cover over the screen works well and I've had no problems with it, or indeed any reason to get that other plastic stuff to protect the screen. No loss in the clarity of the screen. Doesn't weigh much. It comes with a plastic holster which is attached around a belt or can be clipped onto something. However when it is clipped in, I'd be reluctant to do any sort of physical work with the phone hanging off the belt in case it was wrenched off. Very well priced and as one of the previous reviewers said, the yellow is useful for finding the phone amongst a pile of stuff! All-in-all, it does what it needs to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good plug, but bright charging light, 20 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great, compact plug for charging countless devices directly from a wall socket rather than needing a computer link-up. It can also be used to charge iphones etc. It's well made and robust. The only downside to it is the charging light is very bright at night.

4.0 out of 5 stars Versatile and easy to read, 3 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Cateye Enduro 8 - Black (Sports)
Pros: it's easy to see the display even in heavy rain, easy to set up and easy to scroll through the various displays - even with thick winter gloves on. It has handled the plunging winter temperatures well and stood up to the hammering rain too. The option to switch it between two different wheel sizes without re-setting the speedo is useful. The bracket it solid and the speedo clamps into it with a re-assuring 'clunk'. The wire leading to the receiver is about 3mm diameter but is no less pliable than the thin little ones you get on most other speedos. The Enduro speedo also worked on my other cateye Velo 5 clamp, so no need to buy another clamp. Which was nice.

Cons: the instructions for setting it up took a bit of head scratching and, I had to resort to the internet to figure out how to switch it from km's to miles as it doesn't seem to explain it in the instructions. That's not really a reason for not buying one of these - it's just a minor inconvenience during set up.
