5.0 out of 5 stars Very good basic pen, 21 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is my favourite basic pen at the moment. It has a certain industrial (Bauhaus) style to it, it's large enough to always be a comfortable hold, and the refills are generally widely available. It writes smoothly enough, and is therefore a good choice as a go-to everyday pen, whilst the plastic feels of sufficiently high quality as to last a long time.

Dictatorship, State Planning, and Social Theory in the German Democratic Republic
Dictatorship, State Planning, and Social Theory in the German Democratic Republic

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, 21 Mar. 2014

Not many authors would have the range to compare national writings in economics, law and philosophy in a single book. For this reason this is a great book which underlines the value of treating the output of intellectuals even in states labelled communist or totalitarian seriously. I found the summary of GDR writings on economics and cybernetics particularly fascinating, but most fascinating overall is obviously how these writings represented an alternative path of reform that never coalesced. Ironically the weakest thinker in the collection comes across as the major philosopher Ernst Bloch, but this may be a result of the presentation itself rather than Bloch's actual work (which I haven't read).

4.0 out of 5 stars Roxy's Dark Masterpiece, 30 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Manifesto (Audio CD)
The conventional view is that Roxy became increasingly staid after Brian Eno left. I respectfully disagree. Bar perhaps two or three perhaps slightly less engaging tracks after the half way point-'Cry Cry Cry' and 'Dance Away' let's say- this album is a dark and gripping masterpiece and, as others have said, might just be Roxy's best work.
First of all, people confuse Roxy's image with their substance. The image of Bryan Ferry in his evening jacket leads people to confuse Roxy Music with some kind of middle-of-the-road cocktail band. They were never that.
Second, I think many people miss just how radical Ferry's musical compositions were-if one were to argue that this was cocktail music, then it was cocktail music via Brecht, the Weimar Republic, early electronica, R'n'B and the subtle revolution of the electric guitar. Even when dealing in what in other hands could be straight ahead pop or R'n'B tunes, there was usually a disturbing dissonance at the back of Roxy tracks that always elevated them above the mundane-whether the weird horns on 'Angel Eyes' here, or the demonic child's music box toy tinkling in the background of closing track 'Spin me Round'. The first six tracks and final track on this album epitomize Roxy's cleverness with texture and aural depth of sound, but work terrifically as straight out songs as well. Perhaps the fact that the music is both complex and fiendishly well executed, but is also danceable is what has lead the band post-Eno to be so underrated. Not many bands could pull off the trick of being both complex and punchy quite as well as is done repeatedly here.
Thirdly and finally, nobody has ever sung quite like Bryan Ferry. This point perhaps doesn't get made perhaps as often as it should be, but in the pop music vocal tradition the guy is completely unique-not a screamer but not a mumbler either, a very clear and distinct voice with an inventive approach (he does a lot with what is sometimes very little here, an approach which would become even more apparent in his 1980s solo work). Though in the end he pulls off the trick of not sounding quite like anybody else you've ever heard, he's closer to Sinatra and Bing Crosby perhaps than more 'rock' singers-but then listen to the very dissonant and sometimes disturbing melodic contexts and lyrics he uses. This is not a sentimental or sappy album. I don't care about Ferry's politics-what little I know of them , I don't particularly like-but this music alone gets him a place in the pantheon of one of Britain's most original and unusual pop artists.

A great, simple chopping board, all you need in my opinion. Form meets function, a decent size and easy to clean, looks great.

ADE germany, Mechanical Bathroom Scales, BM 702, Felicitas

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid German quality, 13 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
With bathroom scales you generally get what you pay for, it doesn't pay to go too cheap. These are a handsome and very solid set of bathroom scales for those who have made the shift from stone to kilograms, and look as if they will last for years. They are almost an art object in terms of design, and immediately inspire confidence-definitely worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality, 18 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Outstanding item, gives an unsurpassed close shave. From the first use I did not get a single cut-there are plenty of videos online to show how to use it, so observe and simply proceed with appropriate care and caution. It's a SAFETY razor, not a cut-throat razor, so you're not going to end up doing a Sweeney Todd on yourself anyway. This German Merkur is the epitome of simple yet effective technology, and a million miles better than any multi-bladed disposable razor that I have ever used. Abandon the con game of the modern disposable razor-the cost for the cartridges is an increasingly bad joke, and their performance is far, far below what older double edged razor systems can deliver. Pair this with Russian razor blades instead, and you'll be set for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing radio, 28 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The hype is all true. This is an amazing sounding radio, compact yet powerful. Reception (for me where I am at least) is crisp and clear, whilst the level of sound projection is to die for-I was amazed by the sheer level of volume when I first turned it on. The lack of presets means in practice that choice is in your hands, the way it should be, and the dial is very smooth at tuning. At the same time as just being way more than loud enough, the radio's sound is also rich and rounded however, with no trace of hiss, static or sharpness that I could hear, and the wood definitely adds some warmth. Worth every penny, this is simply the best of it's kind I think, check out the manufacturer's website.

The Iron Heel - The Original Classic Edition
The Iron Heel - The Original Classic Edition
by Jack London
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.94

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but stay away from this edition, 23 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great book in terms of content, in many ways ahead of its time. Although aspects have dated, reading it even today with its warnings about oligarchy, and its (unusually gloomy and frank) views on the fact that revolution may repeatedly fail, makes for an interesting read. The narrative is also quite cinematic. However, I would advise staying away from this edition-it's printed in a most peculiar style, which is really quite annoying to read. In fact, I've rarely seen a poorer formatting job done on any book, with chapter titles at the bottom of pages, paragraphs without indents, and a pretty horrible typeface. I bought it because it was flagged as the 'original classic edition', but nothing about the presentation is classic in any sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little camera, 26 April 2012
Very handy little digital bridge camera for the price. Lots of options, a good range of zoom and image tweaking ('Lomo', sepia, colour, B&W), and very easy and intuitive display screen. Mine came with pouch, strap, batteries too. Really can't be beaten in terms of price in relation to features and comes from a great manufacturer with a long history of producing indestructible and functional photographic tools.
