5.0 out of 5 stars One of Soderbergh's best, 13 Jun. 2015

A great, underrated film. Gina Carano gives an astonishing debut performance, and Soderbergh films it all marvellously using his full box of directorial tricks-razor sharp editing, dramatic lighting, stark silhouettes, and Dublin streets shot through a subtly vignetted lens. Scene after scene sticks in your mind afterwards, and the script masterfully never spells things out-you are left to imagine characters whole background lives from a couple of sentences exchanged between them, just like in real life, where shared memories render over-exposition pointless (my favourite exampe of this are the conversations between Gina Carano's character and her dad, the latter another tiny but marvellously-played role by an almost unrecognizable Bill Paxton). There's also dry humour leavening the darkness, not least with the character of Michael Angarano, an innocent bystander caught up in the action, but who is essential to the plot, as the exposition for the audience's benefit circles around him. He authentically captures how the audience feels in the middle of this film, whilst EVERY ONE of the big names in the cast-Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan MacGregor, a delightfully sleazy Antonio Banderas-also give pitch-perfect perfomances. Soderbergh is a genuinely impressive modern director, a real master of his craft, whose work however seems to switch between original, personal work (this one, Solaris, Che) and work done to pay the bills (the polished yet banal tat that is the Ocean's Eleven trilogy). This is one of his best, largely I think because he saw how amazing Gina Carano could be. Having an authentic heroine who can kick the ass of every single male protagonist is something we deserve to see much more of in our cinema. Seek it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basically a cannonball..., 12 May 2015

Awesome quality. Kettlebells are the best way I have found so far to get fit. You will have to make a decision early on between 'competition' style kettlebells (steel) which remain a regular size as weight increases (making the perfecting of movements at all weights somewhat easier) and cast-iron kettlebells like this series, where the overall size increases with every increase in weight. I use competition kettlebells with my trainer at the gym but secretly prefer the old-school cast iron ones, and use these at home. There is something simple, basic and primitive about them that I enjoy. I have started on 16kg (one pood) to train on and invested in this and a 20kg to give myself physical goals to move on to...If you buy on Amazon Prime you will get it next day, and it is also nearly impossible to then get it any cheaper, since postage is free. Postage costs are serious with these babies otherwise, and your postman will hate you anyway when he has to carry it up the stairs.

This is a very nice item indeed, very much worth the money. The pattern on mine is even more ornate than the one shown on Amazon, with the result that it is a beautiful decorative as well as functional object. A very nice piece of pottery all round.

Great album. The production is quite sparse for a Lee Hazlewood album-I've been spoiled by the incredible string and orchestral arrangements on his almost-cinematic MGM album 'The very special world of...' which probably remains my favourite, it having mapped many visual moments in my mind already. However there is a dryness to the acoustic guitars and tickety bass on this one that screams late 60s-early seventies country, so it has an authentic atmosphere of something classy being produced with very modest means, much like Dylan or Kris Kristofferson at the time. It something you can't fake, and the traditional thunderous reverb on the voice is still very much there. It needs to be played on a good sound system, not in the car or on an MP3, to be appreciated, and like most of Lee's stuff is best enjoyed at dusk with the sun falling over the river or sea and a whisky in your hand. The album is worth it for 'Come on home to me' and 'If its Monday morning' alone in my view, but the spoken intros really tie the whole thing together, and the traditional humour ladled into some of the misery which all Hazlewood fans look for is also present and correct. The man was unmatchable when he was on his game, and he is here.
