Work It Out [CD 2]

5.0 out of 5 stars defo worth getting for the serious lep fan, 15 Feb 2011
This review is from: Work It Out [CD 2] (Audio CD)
This is defo worth getting for the b-side, the original version of truth?, which is surprisingly different to the one which would subsequently appear on Slang. The prob with the b-side is that it sounds like they were trying too hard to be grunge, and sound like a bunch of sad old gits trying to get down with the kids. Despite that, its still fascinating to see the developement from this to the album version, and for fans of the slang era, there is so litte of that era available other than the actual slang album, and one or two b-sides, that in away this is a very valuable peice of music. Not so mad about the original version of work it out though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good, as are all bleach series', 15 Feb 2011
too entertaining, although this series is still set in the soul society. After having spent about 40 episodes there in total, you get a bit bored of the place. However there are so many fantastic fights in this. Its a very dramatic, exciting series. I'd say it may well be the best anime series ever in an undemanding, throwaway kind of way. It wont test your gray-matter like death note etc, but any series that can keep you coming back after dozens of episodes must be doing something right.

3.0 out of 5 stars not bad...., 15 Feb 2011
I first became aware of this anime in the mid to late ninties when it was released in the uk on vhs. I always wanted to watch it yet somehow never got round to it. BUt all the while i remembered it and hoped to one day watch it. Well, after thirteen years of waiting i was somewhat dissapointed by it after having finally viewed it. It is a little too comical for a horror/supernatural anime. i thought it would be more in the veign of 3x3 eyes et al, but its not. There is very little characterisation, the characters lack a back story etc so you end up not caring about them much. I expected the animation and art work to be ambitios and fairly high budget, this being a Madhouse production and all, but it seems it is a bit of a budget anime. Its not a bad little series though. The dvd lacks any worthwhile extras though. pah.

5.0 out of 5 stars unexpectedly brilliant, 14 Dec 2010
This review is from: 20ten (Audio Cassette)
Who could have thought prince still had the ability or indeed the inclination to make an album in the style of his early 80's 'minneapolis funk' albums, dirty mind, controversy and 1999. This album has some moments of true inspiration, which nearly rival some of his very best songs from his early days. It's stripped down to programmed drums, keyboards, a little guitar, and princes vocals, eschewing much of the indulgence he has shown in recent years with horn sections etc. Its very surprising that a man in his 50's, seemingly past his best, has put out such a fresh sounding, funky and compulsive album. He has somehow managed to make the eighties style of this album seem new and exciting. Dont listen to the negative reviews. If you are a true prince fanm you will find something to really enjoy on this cd, despite some of the songs sounding like they were designed as cheesy game-show theme tunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruddy Bloody Classic anime, 28 May 2010
This is classic cyberpunk. If your a fan of that genre, or Kawajiri, then this is a very worthwhile purchase. Make sure your doovde player can play yank dvds though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the B-side, 28 May 2010
This review is from: Promises [CD 2] (Audio CD)
The double A side tracks are decent enough. The main riff of promises is world class, however the rest of the songs sounds a bit artificial for me, as if they were going out of their way to make a chart topper. Well they got that Mutt fella to help em write it so theres your evidence. back in your face is pretty decent , quite Glam, like T-Rex etc, who most Leppard admirers will know are a big influence on them. For me the highlight is the B-side, worlds collide. Sounds a tad demo-ish, and also souunds like theyve been listening to too much Soundgarden and Pearl jam, its a very typical grunge track. But its a very good song. I'd wager it was intended for Slang, but was dropped for sounding a bit to obviously Grunge. I'm a great fan of the Slang album so the fact it sounds vaguely of that era is a big plus point to me. infact, thats why i bought this single.

Diamonds - The Best Of Dio

4.0 out of 5 stars Dio R.I.P, 28 May 2010
the king (or should that be God, as Dio is italian for God?) of hard rock singers recently snuffed it. What a great shame. He was still on top of his game, as anyone who listened to last years Black Sab...i mean Heaven and Hell studio debut will know. I'd say as far as technique and power goes, Ronnie was perhaps the best Hard Rock singer we've seen, and this compilation is excellent evidence of that. It's worth buying just for Holy Diver and Rainbow in the Dark alone, but on top of that you get a dozen other mostly excellent rock songs. What interests me about this cd other than rjd's phenomenal voice, and the excellent musicianship, is that you can really see how Ronnies compositional ideas have influenced other musicians. 'We Rock' has a rhythm that sound very similar to Yngwie Malmsteen's 'I'll see the light tonight' and his numerous other re-hashes of that song. Most Malmsteen fans will be aware that he is a great fan of Dio, so it wouldn't surprise me if he pinched ideas from Dio, as he did with the aforementioned song. What a shame, we'll never see those two leaders of their fields collaborate now :(
Anyway, this is an excellent best of which i feel any self respecting Hard Rock enthusiast should own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gazza at his best, 28 May 2010
This review is from: Run for Cover (Audio CD)
This album rocks the house down, its excellent. you cant argue with chunks of rock genius such as out in the fields, and run for cover. Gazza really knows how to create exciting, dramatic rock music. Even the poppier songs are excellent, despite what the naysayers who have previously reviewed this might think. The only problem with the album for me is that different songs on the album feature different lead singers, either Gazza himself, Phil Lynott or Glen Hughes, i feel it was unnecessary to use Glen Hughes for vocals as he sounds like Gazza anyway, but with a whinier voice. I would have been happy with just Gaz and Phil. Anyway, loads of fantastic songs on this cd, including the aforementioaned ones, and Empty rooms. Think i'll knock one star off for Glens annoying, whiney, indulgent singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent compilitaion more for fans, 28 May 2010
This review is from: Queen Rocks (Audio CD)
I'm not so sure this compilation would really appeal to casual Queen fans, or the general public, as it features some of Queens more obscure, less accessible classics. However, the track listing is very generous, and the quality of music is excellent. Paricular highlights are 'Keep Yourself Alive', and 'Sheer Heart Attack'. What also makes this cd stand out from most best ofs is that the songs included on here are the album versions, which usually have extra middle sections, and longer intro's than the single versions you might find on greatest hits 1, 2 and 3.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent compilation, 19 Mar 2010
This is a fantastic introduction to Thin lizzy. Almost every track is excellent. Catchy, rocking, easily accessible rock songs. From hearing classics on this cd, like dont believe a word, chinatown, jailbreak, waiting for an alibi, i have gone on to purchase a number of Lizzy's studio albums. Bizzare how this, along with other lizzy best of's has a couple of Gary Moore songs on it, and theyve tried to pretend they are thin lizzy tracks, (when they just have Phil Lynott on vocals), but those are excellent tracks too. Highly recommended.
