The Leader's Dilemma: How to Build an Empowered and Adaptive Organization without Losing Control, 27 April 2011
The Leader's Dilemma offers a dazzling disclosure of the greed of contemporary flawed managers and corrupt business practices which led the world to the 2007/8 economic disaster. The authors label a new business era run by ethical nihilists who pursue every loophole in this epoch of deregulation to maximise shareholder value and enrich themselves as rapidly as possible, while neglecting the core business objectives and primary stakeholders (customers). This is an enlightening book on the fundamentals of management that ridicules the culture of "business is only about making money" and "management is about targets".
The authors explore the root cause of unscrupulous business practices which they explain as being "systematic" given that for decades the business has been following the "classical economics" and "the command and control management styles", which are primarily based on maximising value for shareholders. In the light of the business culture being misguided by the elite generation from modern business schools, the book calls for a change in mindsets and actions.
A remarkable book that captures the essence of responsible business and promotes an integrated change in business practice in order to achieve longevity.
