3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but a bit repetitive, 30 Sep 2010
The basic proposal of the book is that non-human animals have 'morals'. The definition of morality is not as I would define it. Using a narrow definition, they authors basically say that other animals have 'rules' as to how they behave in their own societies. It is not really ground-breaking and their evidence is Ok but repetitive. It's more of a 'filled'out' booklet than a book. But could stimulate discussion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humourous background to the paintings and the author, 1 Sep 2001
This book provides an excellent range of Philip Hawkins' paintings. It also gives a lively description of the author's life as a youngster - surrounded by the steam age. The paintings shown include modern trains such as the Docklands railway and authentic details from trains and stations in the 50s, developed through Hawkins' great attention to detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars a highly readable and relevant book for new managers, 25 July 2001
I have used this book as the basis for coaching and developing managers. They always express alarm at the size of it - and always say how good and easily readable it is. I always advise browsing to pick bits that the manager finds interesting - and then focus on other specifics later.I find it a useful update as a refresher for more experienced managers. it covers the whole range of 'people' aspects of management (hence 'supervisory'!). Includes Trade Unions, the Law, motivation, leadership etc etc. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but better than nothing, 24 Feb 2001
The book is certainly a handy size - pocket sized. But there are some glaring omissions - the introduction says it is good for Ttravellers, business people and students - but it doesn't include 'hello', good morning/afternoon/day - in fact I can find no greeting at all. Not good for travellers or business people. Also toilet and lavatory are not included. I know as an american book it does not include English usage - but I am not convinced that my Lithuanian colleagues will understand when I ask for the 'bathroom' - it would be very helpful to have toilet or WC or lavatory in reserve if 'bathroom is not understood. Interestingly the lithuanian word for 'room' is not in the Lithuanian section. Strange. However it does include funeral and xylograph - which I am sure will be useful as a business traveller!
I also do not think that the phonetic guide is very good. e.g. it says that the Lithuanian 'a' is pronounced as in 'must' but when looking in the dictionary the pronunciation for words containing 'a' show the pronunciation as 'a' - which another part of the guide says is pronounced as in 'act'. Not well constructed. However the print and layout are very clear and uncluttered. Disappointing but better than nothing!
