We have now begun our descent: How to Stop South Africa losing its way
Price: £6.47

5.0 out of 5 stars Zimbabwe here we come, 26 Dec. 2015

This is a superbly written analysis of how a state can fail. In 1998 President Mugabe was fasted with a similar situation and chose to give the Bush War veterans a pension that the country couldn't afford. The rest is history. In this book Mr Malala has identified where South Africa is headed in the same direction. It is a must read for all South Africans so we can take action to avoid this fate.

Sobering account of war. Only a woman could express the delema faced by all soldiers about killing. The humanity of our fantastic troops comes through. This book should be read by all those involved in national politics and is a must for the Minister of Defence and PM.

What a wonderful account soldiering in war. It is often the lighter side of these dreadful periods that are remembered and keep soldiers from becoming depresses. I recommend every would be soldier and military historian read these tails from a very fine soldier.

I loved the way the story was woven it an intricate tapestry. Indeed as we say the rich tapestry of life. Having lived in Asia and South Africa. I found aspects of both continents so true. I was spell bound throughout. The use of language makes this book a classic.

The period of Rhodesia was very short, but for those who enjoyed the quality of life the memories live on. This book opened Pandora's box and the memories cascaded out. Thank you Susan for a biography that highlighted the human aspects of the end of Empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars new slant on well known history, 25 Nov. 2013

I think of the battle of El Alamein as field guns firing wheel hub to wheel hub, yet here is a well researched insight to the other aspects of turning the tide of the Second World War. A must read for any would be military historian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the normal Zimbabwe memoir, 25 Nov. 2013

Memories of what was called Sinoia when I lived there came flooding back. The Retziaff's love of horses and their commitment to maintain an ever growing troop was an inspiration. This is a book that could have been filled with despair but some how found hope and courage. Beautifully written.

I recommend that everyone should read this book. Col Warren demonstrates the sheer boldly minded character in the most difficult of situations that made Britain great. We should all look up to this man of men.
