4.0 out of 5 stars Broad Range of Topics, 26 Mar. 2015

Mary gives a good cross section of Topics in this book version of weblogs.

She discusses all kinds of topics and even prints the intelligent comments posted by others. That is to emphasise the intelligent ones - not the vitriolic abuse on many web sites. She also discusses this.

A good read from a good writer and intellectual.

The late Simon Hoggart gives very amusing and witty anecdotes about his life writing sketches the bulk of these as a Guardian writer.

He met politicians that are household names, and wrote his sketches encompassing them all in his very amusing and special anecdotes.

A very good, entertaining read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great aid to read Proust, 9 Dec. 2014

I have attempted to read Proust' magnum opus on a few occasions but haven't got very far. As Patrick Alexander explains with an imaginative analogy, it is is rather like scaling a high wall to a beautiful garden and inside are delights to be found.

This reader is a an excellent insight into the work. It explains and elucidates the work with all the characters described.

It will certainly help with the reading the work and give added incentives to tackle it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming memoirs...!, 4 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very enjoyable read. It recalls a time which Alan Johnson lived through whilst working for the GPO(as it was so quaintly called) The loss of his brother In law and rise within the Trade Union movement. It ends with the break up of his marriage.
He writes well and with clear plain prose, always keeping you engaged.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still very witty and full of anecdotes...., 5 Oct. 2014

The first part of these memoirs are very good. But then towards the end Stephen's 1993 diary(which amusingly is given the sobriquet Daisy)is brought in.

Nevertheless, it's full of wit and SF's inimitable colourful prose.
