This review is from: Paula Spencer (Hardcover)
Easy read, not a patch on the The Woman who Walked into Doors, Roddy Doyle's previous novel about Paula Spencer. The book started well, but lost any sense of direction about half-way through. The unconvincing interactions between Paula and her sisters just drag. Jack's character is not developed and Leanne is thrown in just to give Paula something to do. Characters from other countries are patronisingly drawn. There's an occassional bit of poorly disguised sermonising from the writer re Ireland and people who have come here to work in lower paid/unskilled jobs. Attention to detail does not make up for a lack of plot. We are no wiser about Paula Spencer and that's a pity.
