excellent continuation of a fine series where the author ensures you are educated as well as entertained - what could be better in an historical novel?

I agree with others - great little low budget film spoilt only by lack of Jap dialogue not being made comprehensible by lack of Brit subtitling - why?
Jason D shines as a serious actor. Well worth the serious war movie collector's investment as a testament that low budget does not mean low quality film as 'No Man's Land' , 'Lost Patrol' , 'The Void' 'A Midnight Clear' & the classic 'Time Out of War' etc so ably demonstrate.

shows just what can be achieved on a small budget. Good story & nice scenery with understated acting (no prima donnas) depicting personal feelings amongst 'ordinary' soldiers who would rather not be there rather than big scale action. Looks authentic. I liked it!

Well I could not fault it but then I am not an American nor an ex-soldier. Good film as far as I am concerned in my innocence.

Excellent mini-series. Loved the mind games. Only niggle was the seemingly inability to hit anybody despite the propensity of high powered modern firepower used plus the usual American handguns that never run out of bullets but one comes used to expect this. Well worth watching. (again no swearing on American TV - like in '24' - hard to take for UK viewers! )

5.0 out of 5 stars Love and heartache in a nation's time of upheaval, 17 April 2015

Fascinated by anything to do with WW1, I read this book with interest. Predominantly a story of tender love trying to survive the trauma of wartime separation and obligation to duty. Eric Foster is an Englishman with German family connections escaping a dull career and finding himself sent to Heidelberg University. Alone, he is befriended by Gerdt from an aristocratic family. Welcomed into their society, he joins a Prussian German Cavalry Regiment of which Gerdt's father was the Colonel. Eric Foster is transformed into Erich Von Schellendorf using his mother's maiden name. Falling in love with the feisty Brigitte, the sister of Gerdt, their relationship develops and they marry. Meanwhile war looms and Erich fights on the Russian Front. Family influence removes Erich from combat and into logistics administration and military police work on the Western Front facing the French.
Events transpire to distance Brigitte from Erich and he becomes aware of Brigitte's coldness in his rare moments of leave. Increasingly frustrated and his imagination overriding reasoned thought, Erich seeks to determine the real cause of their marital woes. Meanwhile the war drags on to its inevitable conclusion and post-war uncertainty and financial ruination.
The story then deals with the complications of relationships. Erich is English fighting for the Germans. He is at 'war' with his father and adapts to his new families of 'The Regiment' with its rigid codes of behaviour and honour and his new adoptive in-laws and their cultures. Initially idyllic, the relationship with his wife gradually deteriorates to Erich's utter helplessness worsened by the physical separation demanded by Erich's need to perform his dull but necessary duties. Erich is obviously disappointed to be missing the chances of old-fashioned honour in a combat role but he is there due to powerful forces outside his control. Positively hostile to one suspect of his wife's affections, his realisation of the facts does not resolve the matter but only complicates things further. We are left wondering how Erich and Brigitte will fare after the war as Germany is in a mess and its soldiers feel betrayed and prey to sinister ideologies waiting in the wings in the 1920s and 1930s.
An excellent start to the quartet, in a well written and engagingly page-turning style. Excellent vignettes of pre-war life of the privileged in Germany. A refreshing change to the usual 'blood and guts' format of war fiction. Putting in my order for volume two.

Enjoyed the film generally except for the hero's unnatural recovery from 90% burns & did not understand the interview with Hitler at the end at all. Good action scenes and sense of evil pervading the forests and empty villages.
