4.0 out of 5 stars A book with depth and also a page turner, 14 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Seveneves (Kindle Edition)
This book will stay with me I think, whilst having some flaws. I think in a few years I'll remember the drama and the big themes and I will have forgotten the bits that were, honestly, just worth skipping. For some reason there were very detailed, very technical sections that seemed mostly the author showing off his research, but to the reader it was hard to visualise the scene and hard to care. So just skip past. Do that and the rest of it is very powerful. In fact a rare combination of a book with depth and also a page turner.

2.0 out of 5 stars The pictures are good when they are not blurred, 31 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The pictures are good when they are not blurred. It takes AGES between pressing the button and the picture being taken. AGES. But all that is a minor detail. I bought it because I wanted WI-FI. That barely works at all. I have got it to work. Twice. Other times I have to give up and resort to using the cable. Today after a long time talking to the (very attentive and trying very hard) Canon support, the best he could come up with is, "perhaps reboot the router". This is no use to me. My network setup is hardly obscure, it is a BT router and a computer running Windows 7. My smart phone (and tablet) remember the wireless key for every network they have met. This camera remembers nothing. Not that it matters, as it doesn't work anyway.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spare youself the pain I'm suffering and don't read this book, 18 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Just dull.. Have struggled as far as the third book and wish I could finish it and get on with something worth reading. Reminds me a little of third book of Gormenghast, where a big sprawling world is described in huge detail but ..why ? The detail just is like listening to the worlds most boring man on his pet subject. The plot, if there is one, is stretched so thin as to barely exist. The characters are also unengaging and the cosmology seems to amount to "there's no intelligent life in the nearby galaxies so the universe is so bland most transcendants just kill themselves."

3.0 out of 5 stars You spend time being annoyed at how bad the really-really-bad guys are behaving towards ..., 2 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is a large-canvass space opera as the backdrop but the authors seem to have decided it is only at the level of human relationships that the reader can be engaged. The result for me is a miss. You spend time being annoyed at how bad the really-really-bad guys are behaving towards the really-really good guys. This is engagement, but on a very superficial level. The opportunity of writing about the future, the technologies, the politics, the galaxy, the conflicts, seem to have been ignored.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice solid bench, 2 Aug. 2014

This arrived when they said and was OK to assemble. I needed a G-cramp as well as the obvious screw driver. The end result is a nice solid (heavy) bench.

5.0 out of 5 stars When is the next one coming out ?, 24 Mar. 2014

Quite addictive reading. If I could change anything it would be to have the whole series published so I could read them back to back. As it is..I'll have to wait.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nearly good., 5 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Seems like the author thought only 13 year old boys would read this and so filled it full of sex. Irrelevant sex that just got in the way. In fact the premise of a soldier captured by aliens, personality emulated on an android body and then resurrected in the far future is a good one. Lots of opportunity for space opera, action, conflict...no need really for all the sex. I might read a sequel, but if I do I'll skip the eroticism and flick forward to the violence, which is far better...

I uninstalled this rapidly. I was hoping for something factual and un-showy like the Yahoo weather app you can get for IOS. This is not that...

4.0 out of 5 stars Always witty. Story was a bit more gripping in this fifth book., 1 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The good bits are still there. The Victorian manners and sensibilities make the sex seem naughtier (I assume a deliberate ploy). The Jane Austin style commentary on behaviour still contrasts so well with the Josh Wheadon style violence. This book improved a bit for me on the middle ones in the series. The story was more interesting, a bit more of a page turner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Readable, with flaws., 17 Mar. 2013

A good read, that's the important thing. Flaws include poor English (or proof reading), such as using incredulous for incredible and some clear lack of knowledge (e.g. confusing a nautical mile with a knot). Also irritating was the needless little plot give-aways and predictions of future sadness. Why tell the reading that a given romance is doomed to tragedy ? In books like this they all are anyway.. But I'll probably read the third in the series.
