This isn't my usual kind of thing at all, but I really enjoyed it! It's genuinely funny and well written - much more so than it needs to be, in fact, with lots of sly humour and knowing cultural references. And the production values are great, with full colour throughout and nice spot lamination on the cover which make it feel like something to keep. The perfect Secret Santa present, and not bad as a loo book either. Great fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice new edition of an absolute classic, 25 Nov. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
It's hard to overstate the importance of Gilbert White, not only to the field of natural history, but to our idea of ourselves as British and to our understanding of the British landscape. This is (I believe) the third most popular book ever published in the English language and has never been out of print; it was a favourite of soldiers in WW1 who found in it a touchstone that helped them hold on to what they were fighting for. This is a handsome new edition that combines the feel and production values of a gift book with an excellent new introduction that sets Gilbert White and his two collections of letters in context. A great buy for anyone interested in natural history, wildlife or history and a real wellspring of the English imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally worth the money, 23 Nov. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
You know how, with most things, you can just get the own-brand version and it's just as good? It doesn't work like that with dishwasher products. We've tried various cheaper alternatives to Finish over the last couple of years and they've all been crap, leaving tea stains in mugs, a filmy residue on cutlery or making our glasses go cloudy. We've come to the conclusion that Finish is the only one that really works. NB. It's the same with blister plasters too, for some reason! Trying to cut corners ends up a false economy. Finish/Compeed FTW.

Not bad for under a fiver, but the rubber grip keeps coming off and having to be pushed back on.

Really pleased with this. The fit is very good and I can wear it beneath other things for warmth, without any bumps or bits showing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice little set but spoiled by the slipcase, 4 Nov. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a pretty little set, but it's annoying that it says 'Gift Box' in big letters on the back of the slipcase. It would have been better for this to have been printed on the packaging, so that when it was removed the slipcase was just patterned. It makes the set look a bit cheap - and the recipient may not want it sitting there, constantly advertising the fact that it was a present.

Still, the OED is so far ahead of other dictionaries in terms of quality that for casual use (ie not for a job or a degree) I'd have this little pair over most of the competition. Pleasingly up-to-date, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitive, 29 Oct. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
You'd think this would only be of use to experts and dealers, but far from it: it's an absolutely fascinating manual for car booters, armchair enthusiasts and Antiques Roadshow fans alike. The kind of book that draws you in almost every time you open it up, it's as much a history lesson as a price guide, and a must for anyone with an interest in the past.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ÜBER COOKBOOK, 23 Sept. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is absolutely and without doubt the best cookery book I've ever come across, and is ideal for both the complete beginner and the confident cook as it offers a range of dishes from the very simple to the extremely ambitious. The structure is ingredient by ingredient, and with each one you are given an introduction to what it is and what it goes with, preparation techniques, and then some recipes using that ingredient as a key item.

It's absolutely full to the gills with clever kitchen ideas and techniques, including things like jointing a chicken, curing and deglazing a pan, mending a split hollandaise, poaching eggs and chopping onions. The section on sauces will help you understand all the different types and how they differ as well as when they should be used, and the section on stocks made me realise where mine had been going wrong.

In terms of recipes it covers all the classics. The emphasis is on French dishes but there are lots of other ideas included from around the world, too. In all cases, though, you feel as though you're getting the absolute best of all the varieties of that dish out there - the ne plus ultra for that given dish.

Due to the sheer amount of information being conveyed, not every recipe is photographed and I do tend to find myself drawn more to the ones with pictures than those without! But this is Leith's, so you really can trust that they are all excellent.

There's a glossary of cooking terms at the back which I found really helpful. This book really is all you need to learn to become a genuinely amazing cook.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and unique: will carry this with me on every walk now!, 25 Aug. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a cracking little book. It's slim enough to fit in the map pocket of your coat or rucksack and has a tough, wipe-clean cover. Inside, as well as being a decent identification guide for the most common UK plants, birds and animals, it also has sections on things like clouds, landscape features (eg U-shaped valleys, sinkholes, corries), crops, navigation techniques, ancient relics and industrial heritage. OK, so the information given on these subjects is necessarily brief, but to be able to look up what's growing in field when you're out and about, read a bit about the layout of typical villages, look up an insect or learn a little weather lore is just brilliant. I know of no other book that brings together these different areas in this way, which is actually so useful as to seem obvious: why on earth hasn't anyone thought of it before?

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ice cream scoop, 28 July 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Great scoop, heavy and strong with a smooth cup. Worked really well on home-made ice cream, which is always harder to serve than shop bought. Like it.
