Over-Packaged and Best Chilled., 25 Mar. 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I think you have to be clear about what this is and what it's not. So this is the actual liquid that is inside a coconut - whereas we are more used to coconut milk, which is the fibre that is inside the coconut, mashed up and then a lot of sugar is added to make the kind of coconut creme that goes into a cocktail like a Pina Colada.
Coconut water then, is nothing like a Pina Colada and is here being promoted as a healthy and natural alternative to isotonic sports drinks, which can have too much sugar and too many additives for some people. The idea is that it is a fat-free drink that can aid rehydration and is 100% natural and additive free.
Of course the thing is that it could be the best drink in the world, but if you don't like the taste, then you won't drink it. I think it's easy to be put off, if you try this at room temperature and it benefits hugely from being chilled. It's also suggested that it could be used as a base for creating 100% natural smoothies.
When chilled well, I was quite neutral about this drink - although it does have a certain aftertaste. I think most people will find it an acquired taste, but it could be very useful as a natural, healthy mixer in liquidised fruit drinks or smoothies.
You get six fairly large bottles (500 Ml) for a reasonable price - although it does seem to be over-packaged by Amazon and the bottles are well sealed with foil and have sturdy caps for re-use.
