5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Tale, 4 April 2014

Haven't been to see the film but can see why this account of his life was selected for the screen. Hard to put down: factual, well written and compelling.

Good story and well written. As with other Moyes books (except Me Before You) overall plot predictable but enough surprises to keep the interest going.

Reading Terry Brooks' is like sitting in your favourite armchair: you know you are going to love it. This latest in his new trilogy suffers a little from a bit of 'sameness', which is inevitable when he's been writing about the same thing for a long time. However, he has such a gifted way of engaging you in these fantasies that it doesn't really matter whether it's a bit like one of the others or not, you just hunker down and enjoy it.

A good holiday read, but fairly forgettable afterwards. However, it didn't make me want to buy more by the same author.

I was filling a gap in my classics when I decided to read this, and it's easy to see why it has stood the test of time. A rollicking good tale.

This was the first book I had read by Moyes, and it was a stunner. The story dealt with some difficult topics in a very well researched way, and I think I used half a box of tissues at the end. Well-written and beautifully presented.

The book was interesting - if you are a mountaineer or a climber: it's full of technical terms that the average reader wouldn't understand. Taking nothing away from the incredible feat of survival, the book, which was well-written, was pretty unputdownable and, having already seen the film/documentary previously, I knew what was going on. It was also interesting to read how revisiting the site affected Joe. However, my advice is: if you don't do climbing or understand the terminology of climbing equipment/climbing methods, give the book a miss and watch the movie instead.

Not sure if this is one of Moyes' better books: the plot was a bit transparent, and it seemed over-long and with too much concentration on emotions. Towards the end I was skimming because I just wanted it to get the the point. Without giving too much of the story away, it seemed unlikely that some further investigation work wouldn't have been carried out prior to all that occurred.

Having read all Terry Brooks' Shannara series, I was faintly disappointed by this last trilogy, and particularly by Book 3 which, sadly, felt like I'd read it all before. Doesn't stop Brooks from being a great raconteur and fantasy writer, but is it time he went down a different route and left Shannara behind him?

Everyone should read this tale of the English class system at its best, or worst, dependent upon your view. Seen it twice serialised on TV, but nothing beats the written word.
