3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy enough effort but not South African enough, 8 Feb. 2010
This review is from: Invictus [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
Two American stars get two Oscar nominations for playing two South Africans whilst a South African actor who produces an astonishing performance in another film (Shalto Copley in "District 9) gets ignored. Dont get me wrong , this is a worthy enough effort but its just not South African enough. This is an American film, with an American director and American stars. Both Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon give good performances but neither are deserving of Oscar nominations. The film is riddled with visual and historical errors, It gives the impression that a visitor can enter Mandelas cell on Robben Island, this is not the case as this cell is kept locked on normal tours. The Ponte building in Jobug has a Vodacom advert on top of it. In 1994 the advert on this building was for Coca Cola. Nelson Mandelas PA is portrayed as a black woman when in fact she was white. Even the soundtrack is written by an American who just happens to be the son of the films director, Clint Eastwood. This is South Africa for American tastes, when its good it it very good , when it is bad it is just awful. No best picture nomination and rightly so although i wouldnt be surprised if it doesnt pick up a "Razzy". A MAJOR disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 22 May 2009
One of the best action movies in years comes to Blu Ray and is a real stunner. Blu Ray transfer is excellent and it really does change the way you watch a movie. Better picture and fantastic sound draws you into the movie. This movie was great on DVD. On Blu its better.Loads better.

5.0 out of 5 stars To complete the collection, 22 May 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dear Ladies - Series 3 [DVD] (DVD)
Dear Ladies series three finally arrives on dvd to complete the collection of adventures of the Dear Ladies of Stackton Tressel. Gyles Brandreth did the scripts for this series and its much funnier than series two. Once again Hinge and Bracket are faultless, never once do you think they are men.I showed series two to H and B virgins on a holiday in Malta last year and they would not believe they were men. Wonderful series shame there wasnt more. Hinge now runs a hotel in France called "Bel Ombrage" and they have regular fan weekends. I cant think of a better way to spend an evening.

4.0 out of 5 stars That rare thing. A good US horror movie., 16 April 2009
This review is from: Mirrors [Blu-ray] [2008] (Blu-ray)
When i saw this last year i had no idea it was a remake.I found it to be one of the best horror films ive seen for ages.Set in a burned out department store, its dark and rather creepy and it is also very bloody from the opening scene and not for the easily disturbed. The cinema release was cut to get a 15 rating so what you get here is the full version hence the 18 rating. The casting of Kiefer Sutherland aims the movie away from the tweenie age group and he is as usual extremely good. Having not seen the original i cant compare the two movies but this version is that rare thing nowadays, a good ,well made horror. You really wont want to look in a mirror after seeing this. Should look a treat on Blu Ray as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars And about time too!!!, 22 Feb. 2009
One of the best of seventies comedies finally gets its second series released on dvd. Series one has been out for some time also on Network and the first thing you notice is that the covers dont match.Series one has the old style Network cover. This one has a livelier bright cover more like the R1 set which all the real fans will already own. What you get here is a further 8 episodes featuring the ongoing battle of wits between author Dorothy McNabb(Stritch) and her butler (Sinden). Beautifully written(by Bill Macilwraith, author of "The Anniversary) and wonderfully acted ,the highlight here is the episode "The Cleaning Ladies" featuring a wonderful guest role by Patsy Rowlands. Presumably the remaining series will be available soon but the whole series is on R1 and it comes in a slipcase as well. Well done Network for finally releasing this but its a shame its taken so long.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most INTERESTING xmas album-ever, 26 Nov. 2008
This review is from: 101 Christmas Songs (Audio CD)
Whist not having the usual suspects such as Slade,Shaky et all this is still a worthwhile buy. It is more a seasonal selection rather thanS specifically christmas stuff. Stop the cavalry is there(disc 1) tho id prefer it if it wasnt as after having a downstairs neighbour who used to blast it out at all hours im pig sick of it!! Theres some lovely 50s and 60s stuff (Alma Cogan and the divine Kay Starr, a whole heap of Nat King Cole and Dean Martin and almost a disc of real christmas songs. Even The Muppets turn up although the inclusion of The Seekers Morningtown Ride is baffling until played alongside the wintery feel of the other tracks. This is a really fine selection that merits the title The most interesting xmas album....Ever.Granny will love it as it will bring back many happy memories of her christmases past.Christmases where Simon Cowells karaoke acts didnt exist and kids were happy with an apple an orange and a nana.Truly wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fuji magic, 31 Dec. 2007
A friend had this camera and was raving about it. After purchasing one myself i can see why. Easy to use, great picture quality, superb battery life and it feels like a real camera. at just over a hundred quid this really is an amazing bargain. It even comes with a set of Energiser batteries.I had an HP Photosmart before this and it was awful. This is like upgrading to a Rolls Royce after driving an Austin 7.
