A very thought provoking read................, 6 July 2013
A subject which will touch most of our lives, the care of the elderly and specifically the care of the elderly confused and their place in our society. This book deals with the healthcare or lack of in Cyprus but many of the problems are worldwide issues even in those countries that deem themselves 'Western and forward thinking'. Unfortunately the elderly, both in care and those cared for by families or outside carers in their own homes, seem to be dealt a very raw deal in many cases. The funding is not made available for that care and people are not given the support needed. There is also a lack of resources just to deal with the problems on a day to day basis and a lack of understanding by some of the professionals supposed to provide that care. This book gives a harrowing insight into the later years of one elderly, Cypriot lady and the effect on her son and his family as they battle with the system. Extremely interesting read although incredibly upsetting at times. Should be compulsory reading for all involved in any aspect of care and all those who believe they may ever be.
