5.0 out of 5 stars New edition hits the spot, 26 May 2009
The first edition of the Filemaker Bible mainly written by Ray Cologon, Filemaker Bible 9, was in this reviewer's view the best book on Filemaker since "Scriptology". This new edition entirely written by Cologon continues in that tradition. With about 50 additional pages and much of the rest reworked to help developers get the best from Filemaker 10 this is the best book available on how to make Filemaker work for you using good practice throughout. Many developers use out-of-date techniques they picked up in previous versions of the product. Frequent reference to the new edition of the bible is the best way to avoid making those big mistakes that can cause so much frustration and additional work when you use out-of-date none good practice techniques.

There are quite a few very clever and well informed people around the Filemaker world, but Cologon is both very clever and very good at communicating, a quality not shared by all his peers. Two of the other best clever communicators, Corn Walker and Jason DeLooze continue as technical editors of this edition which thus increases the volume's authority. Hence this book gives great value and time invested in studying will be rapidly repaid in reduced development time and better solutions.

The one thing I would like, but couldn't find, is a black line system showing changes from the previous edition which would make it easier to review Cologon's latest best advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Filemaker Book since Scriptology, 15 July 2008
This review is from: FileMaker Pro 9 Bible (Paperback)
FileMaker Pro 9 Bible

I have scanned through some of the mighty tome received a few days ago and rapidly concluded it is the best Filemaker book I have bought since Scriptology in 1998 - this great compliment is well earned.

I have bought very few Filemaker books over the last 10 years or so that I have been engaged in working with Filemaker full time as most computer books of this genre unashamedly recycle the manufacturer's own documentation and, if you are lucky, add a few elements of insight or creativity - hence are generally of little value given that Filemaker's own built in help is generally very good.

The Filemaker 9 Bible is different in that it offers both lucid enhancement of the Filemaker documentation and normal features together with many genuinely creative explanations and techniques of real and significant value.

I am sure that it will influence and inform my own approach to development for the better.

There are a few less positive reviews on which complain the Bible is too technical and demands that the reader follow instruction on how to build various aspects of a Filemaker Application.

This view is difficult to understand. Ray Cologon is in my view one of the best and most lucid communicators regarding the use of Filemaker stuff generally. Whilst others may hide behind sloppy language he is very good at communicating about sometimes necessarily complex matters clearly and concisely.

His approach in providing precise instruction in how to use the techniques he has documented seems ideal since he is providing real value with this knowledge transfer.

This book is head and shoulders above other works aiming to give an overview of the use of Filemaker Pro in the real world and as such is very welcome.
