The Three Faces of Evil
The Three Faces of Evil

4.0 out of 5 stars A very illuminating insight into understanding the behaviour of people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, 7 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very well-written and easy to comprehend description of the 3 levels of narcissistic behaviour by people, who display this unfortunate personality disorder. It explains how to recognise the signs and how to protect yourself from their destructive behaviour. These individuals are very much "wolves in sheeps' clothing" and can be very charming and plausible. It seems that if you get on the wrong side of these people and thwart their desires, they can turn on you and be very damaging to your emotional well-being in the milder cases, and even physically dangerous in the extreme psychopathic end of the spectrum. Fortunately, I have only met people at the milder end of the spectrum and have always wondered where our friendship has gone wrong, only to realise that our relationship was doomed from the start. Unless, you are prepared to flatter them constantly and agree to their unreasonable demands, you really have to walk away from them with your well-being intact. A very helpful guide from someone, who has had personal experience and has studied the condition from the perspective of a professional psychotherapist, and is an expert in this field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful AVIV handmade sterling silver and round blue opal inlay drop earrings, 28 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These silver and opal Aviv earrings are extremely pretty and striking with a width of about 12 mm. The drop including the hook is 25 mm. The hand-beaten silver surround has a very high shine, except where there is a square oxidised feature encasing each inlaid round, bright blue opal. When the earrings do require polishing at some later stage, this would need to be done with an impregnated silver cleaning cloth NOT a silver dip, to prevent damage to the oxidised silver surface and the porous opal stones. The hooks are strong and very well made and clip into small retaining silver hooks at the back of the earrings, thus enabling a secure fit. I believe that there is a matching pendant available through Amazon Jewellery. A lovely handmade design which is very well made and looks bespoke.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating, well-written and researched insight into the Arab world and the rise of Islamic State, by a Middle Eastern author, 12 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found the e-book to be very well written and extremely well researched. I often see Abdel Bari Atwan on "Dateline London" a televised journalists' review programme and find his opinions to be wise, informed and interesting. I also wanted to read the views of someone who originates from the Arab world to get their perspective on this new phenomenon.in the Middle East. The author gave a lot of background information and history of the region that explained the conditions that allowed this terrorist movement to emerge. He also gave a pen-portrait of El-Baghdadi the new Caliph, explaining that this was built up as a mosaic of impressions from people who had some personal contact with the leader. The book also explained the motivations of heads of neighbouring states, such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia and why their actions were a reflection of their own political rivalries, often unconnected to IS. Altogether a very worthwhile and fascinating read.

4.0 out of 5 stars An insightful account of life as Picasso's eldest grandchild told with great sincerity and pain, but with an inspiring outcome, 18 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very thoughtful account of life by Marina Picasso in the background of an artistic genius. I suspect that the families of outstandingly talented people often stay in the shadows. Being a genius does not necessarily mean that one is a warm or sympathetic person. In fact, it takes a single-minded focus to be a prolific and exceptionally creative artist. Some people have objected to this critical account of life as a grand-daughter of the great Picasso, but it is told from her perspective and her feelings at the time. It is therefore authentic to her. She is the daughter of Picasso's son Paolo from his first marriage to the Ukrainian ballet dancer Olga Kochlova. It seems that Picasso was very disappointed in what he considered to be his spineless and alcoholic son and he appears to have often played mind-games with him, like not paying him on time for his work as his chauffeur. As a result, Marina and her brother and mother lived from hand to mouth most of the time, although Picasso was an extremely wealthy man. Despite his wealth, he appears not to have shown a great deal of interest in his money, except as a tool to enable him to be a prolific painter and potter. Picasso needed women, but could often be cold and capricious. During his lifetime and after his death, three of his lovers committed suicide. His own grandson Pablito (Marina's brother) also committed suicide, because he felt rejected by his grandfather. All very sad. Although one can't be directly blamed for someone committing suicide, it does indicate that he had this profoundly negative effect on some people close to him. Marina was an exception and a survivor. Under French inheritance law, Marina inherited a sizeable share of her grandfather's estate by default after her father's early death due to alcoholism. She put her new found wealth to good use by setting up a charity and adopting orphaned children from Indochina and made a success of her life, despite the poverty and rejection in her childhood. An inspiring and true account of life in the shadows of a world famous artist. . . .

A haunting Italian lullaby sung in the end credits of one episode of the last Sopranos' TV series. It is sung in an unusual Italian dialect that purports to be either Sicilian or Sardinian. I had to track it down on Amazon's MP3 music and I love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected gem of a film, 8 Dec. 2014
This review is from: La Veuve De Saint-Pierre (DVD)
A very well told, true story of a condemned criminal in the mid 19th century, on the French-Canadian island of St. Pierre off Nova Scotia in Canada. The story starts with the trial and imprisonment of a condemned criminal, after he and an accomplice kill an old fisherman, after a drunken knife attack. The film centres around the condemned prisoner, Neele Auguste, who is a young, illiterate fisherman, played by the Sarajevan film-director Emir Kusturica (Underground), trying his hand at acting for the first time. The other famous cast members are Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil. While waiting for a guillotine (La Veuve) to arrive from France, the condemned man is treated with great kindness and respect by the Captain of the prison (Auteuil) and his wife (Binoche), to the point where his cell door is left unlocked and he receives good food rations. He also has the option to take or refuse a job to create a garden with a greenhouse in the prison yard. During the long period while the guillotine is awaited, Neele endears himself to the local community by his many helpful deeds. The Captain and his wife then do everything to hinder his sentence of execution being carried out. As a result, the Captain himself faces a charge of insubordination and a court-martial and faces the punishment of death by firing-squad. A beautifully filmed story with excellent performances from the main actors. An unexpected gem of a film. French with subtitles.

3.0 out of 5 stars A slow and slight story, but with an amazing pictorial record of 1950's Naples and the surrounding region, 10 Nov. 2014
This review is from: Journey To Italy (DVD)
A slow and slight plot, but with the most amazing pictorial record of 1950's Naples and its surrounding region. The acting seems rather wooden and dated now, although it is always good value to see Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders. George always portrays boredom so beautifully. The film is in black and white, but each outdoor scene is a gem and gives a wonderful pictorial record of the 1950's Naples area. Every scene is so rich and interesting. The film also provides a tour of famous archaeological sites in the area, as well as showing the unfinished excavation at Pompeii and how the empty spaces in the lava were injected with Plaster of Paris, to reveal the shape of the inhabitants trapped by the eruption of Vesuvius about 2,000 years ago. A really interesting film for completely unexpected reasons.
