3.0 out of 5 stars A rather slow personal story of an ageing French theatrical actor, 6 May 2014
This review is from: I'm Going Home (DVD)
I think this is very much a film for a French audience, because of the famous cast, but I found it rather slow and tame. It shows the life of an ageing classical French theatre actor (Michel Piccolo) when his young grandson becomes orphaned after a tragic road traffic accident. I was expecting more of an interaction between the actor and his grandson, but that was surprisingly superficial. Instead we saw the actor performing at quite some length in classical theatre productions such as Ionescu's "Exit the King" and Shakespeare's "The Tempest". He then is offered more work by his agent, which involves taking part in a TV soap, which he rejects as being beneath his dignity. He is then given a chance to take on a small role in a filmed version of James Joyce's "Ulysses", with John Malkovich.directing the production. He accepts, but It appears that he is not tuned into film acting and has to be frequently corrected by the director. This humiliates him and he walks off the set and "goes home to rest". He can't accept that he is no longer in the prime of his professional career.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good Danish TV police drama, 22 April 2014
This review is from: Unit One (DVD)
I liked it, but wasn't overwhelmed. These are separate episodes of a Danish TV cop drama, set in a mobile unit, called Unit One. The main detective is a woman with a family and she is constantly being called away from home to solve cases. Well. that's her job, after all! There is a good recognisable cast, including Mads Mikkelson, who is seen in many mainstream Danish films. Some of the other cast members are also recognisable from such TV dramas like "The Killing". Denmark is a fairly small country and it seems to have a small repertory company of excellent character actors. The Danes certainly know how to act with their naturalistic gestures and nuances. The performances are very good, but the plot lines are slightly weak, but it's well worth a watch. Try it out for yourselves.

3.0 out of 5 stars A rather violent film about racial tensions in a small Danish town, 8 April 2014
This review is from: Deliver Us From Evil (DVD)
It is the story around two brothers, one of which is a successful lawyer and the other is an ignorant, racist thug. Rather unlikely, but possible, I suppose. The thuggish lorry driver brother tries to pin his own drunken road-kill accident onto a Bosnian refugee living in the town and all hell breaks loose. The lawyer brother defends the refugee and a killing spree stars. The body count mounts inexorably and it looks like the last scene in Hamlet. I found it too violent and I also thought that the characters were too polarised - either completely evil or good, with no shade in between. Life is far more subtle than that and for that reason, I wasn't convinced by the film.

This song is sung in a slightly squeaky manner, but it is Josephine Baker's tribute to her adopted hometown of Paris in France. Charming and original.

5.0 out of 5 stars I just love this ballad of Jacques Brel's tribute to the flatlands of his homeland of Belgium, 30 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this song very moving and all the more so, because the lyrics are entirely those of Jacques Brel, the French speaking singer-songwriter from Belgium. I didn't buy it for Karaoke purposes, but because I wanted a copy of his song and it didn't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very powerful rendition of a spiritual in the style of Mahalia Jackson, 30 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a first-class rendition of a spiritual made famous by Mahalia Jackson. It is very impressive, but is not quite as nuanced as in Mahalia's performance, but still manages to be extremely moving. The accompaniment is better than in Mahalia's recording, although a tad overpowering..

5.0 out of 5 stars A deeply moving spiritual, 30 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is such a moving and emotional performance of a spiritual. The rich and powerful voice of Mahalia Jackson has many different shades and covers a great range of notes. The singing causes the hairs on the back of your neck to stand up. The accompaniment of a theatre organ and snare drums doesn't do justice to her voice, but Mahalia rises above it and renders an amazing interpretation from the heart..

5.0 out of 5 stars A most evocative piece of music, 9 Oct 2013

"The Third Man" is my most favourite film of all time. The zither music of Anton Karas beautifully evokes the atmosphere of post-war Vienna with its bombed out buildings and the black-market racketeers. Absolutely superb and with a haunting melody.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid piece of craftmanship in natural wood, 6 April 2011
Rubber Wood Letter Rack
I was looking for a natural wood product at a reasonable price and this ticked all the boxes. It is fairly substantial and holds a large quantity of letters. It is also a pleasant rustic-looking object. Just what I wanted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wartime Resistance in Rome, 30 Nov 2010
This review is from: Rome, Open City [DVD] [1945] (DVD)
Rome, Open City [DVD] [1945]
This film was made undercover in Rome, in the last days of the Second World War, mainly with unknown actors. The leads - Anna Magnani, Aldo Fabrizi and Harry Feist were professionals, but not in the sort of roles for which they were famous.
The settings are authentic, together with genuine newsreel clips and this creates a real feel of what the Italian Resistance went through. In addition to undercover agents, we see the local priest and ragged children playing their part in the resistance as well. At times, the film is very moving and shocking. Alongside the stories of heroism, there are the parallel stories of people collaborating with the occupying Germans. Harry Feist plays a sinister German officer, who alternately plays "good guy-bad guy" with his quarry, in order to extract information from them. Apparently, the film was actually made during the occupation of Rome and therefore everthing was carried out clandestinely, with smuggled cameras and scraps of old film.
A must for fans of world cinema.Rome, Open City [DVD] [1945]
