4.0 out of 5 stars A collection of pop and rock covers, 17 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Reprise Pop Rock (Audio CD)
An interesting compilation from France with a title that masks the true concept of this album. Assembled here is a lineup of music legends and contemporary hitmakers who offer their own interpretation of a classic song. Ranging from Jeff Buckley's stirring version of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' to Cake's rather bizarre arrangement of Gloria Gaynor's disco anthem 'I Will Survive' and pop princesses like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson who revisit Joan Jett's 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' and Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away'. An odd selection is not one but two versions of the Ray Charles classic 'What'd I Say' - one by Elvis Presley and the other from Johnny Cash. Mostly this is a fun collection and one that gives the listener an opportunity to decide which performance is the best - the original or the cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock On David Essex, 2 Jun. 2009
This review is from: Best Of David Essex (Audio CD)
When David Essex sang 'Gonna Make You A Star', he knew what he was talking about because he'd already been there. And 'The Best Of David Essex' showcases his star quality to perfection, delivering all of his smash hits from the seventies, including 'Hold Me Close', 'Rolling Stone' and the classic 'Rock On'. A superstar from a golden era of pop.

4.0 out of 5 stars Having a Ball with Kenny, 2 Jun. 2009
This review is from: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Somewhere in between Skiffle and Merseybeat, Trad Jazz became one of the UK's most popular music genres. And one of its greatest exponents was Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen. This 'Greatest Hits' collection is the perfect nostalgia trip for Trad Jazz fans and features all of Ball's original hits from the early sixties, including the worldwide smash 'Midnight In Moscow'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moore than just a funnyman, 2 Jun. 2009
This review is from: Jazz Jubilee (Audio CD)
Moore is a very apt name for a man who was much more than a loveable comedian and a highly acclaimed actor. Dudley Moore was also a fine jazz pianist, and with drummer Chris Karan and bass player Peter Morgan, he had the opportunity to indulge in one of his greatest passions - music. Jazz Jubilee is a superb selection of concert performances from the Dudley Moore Trio and includes their Australian Top 10 hit 'Song For Suzy'. A fine legacy of a wonderful entertainer.
