5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 26 Dec 2013
This review is from: The Complete Uncle (Hardcover)
I was also a backer on Kickstarter for Marcus who has well and truly delivered a masterpiece . This edition contains all six of the books lovingly reprinted on top quality paper with the fantastic illustrations by Sir Quentin Blake . I first read the Uncle books back in primary school , then later I managed to obtain the red fox editions of the first two books and read them to my young daughters who , for the first time , were eager for bedtime so they could listen to the adventures of Uncle, Old Monkey , Beaver Hateman , Hitmouse , the One Armed badger et al , so much so they were disappointed when the books were finished and there were no more in print . This Christmas Day they were amazed when they opened a parcel and there was Marcus's edition , especially as I lkisted them as backers their names are listed in the back . I would recommend the Uncle books to anyone , from child to adult , they are full of fun and magical adventures , Marcus Gipps has really made a heroic effort and brought these wonderful stories back to life for a new generation , for ever I hope . I would also recommend a visit to Marcus's website as he has on sale a CD of the the author , J.P. Martin , reading some of the stories , brilliant stuff . If you would like your children to enjoy reading and enter into a magical world of humour , buy this book , it is well worth the money . Well done ,Marcus and thank you once again for making the great effort to bring these books to a new audience .

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, 12 July 2013

This review is from: The Mystery of E Troop (Paperback)
This looked promising however rapidly descended into total rubbish. The author starts with facts then writes as if he knew what the troopers were thinking during the battle and puts words into their mouths , its like a reading a very poor novel. He then repeats both indian and white accounts giving a short opinion on whether it was cemetery ravine or deep ravine some troops died . Hd then writes about the archaeological digs however his style makes it an endurance and a chore to read . I suffered it to the end but this not a book I would recommend for any students of the battle , especially the part where he goes into conjecture about what specific individuals were thinking , it is really appalling to read .

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stories for children, 4 Mar 2010
This is a wonderful series, my 7 year old daughter loves to read them and can't have enough. She almost has them all now, it is well written, entertaining and keeps a child's attention. Full of little fairies, magic, different characters, the young fairies at the academy are just like little girls at school. Well worth buying to improve a child's reading ability and to keep them occupied without being on a games console or computer. I thoroughly recommend this series..

3.0 out of 5 stars Why the cuts in fight scenes?, 16 Nov 2009
I loved this series when it was aired on BBC2 after the Goodies, I watched it right to the end, I bought the first two VHS videos when they were released and realised about 5 minutes has been cut from each episode, mainly the fight scenes. They cut out the scene where Lin Chung's wife is killed, with her blood flowing into the water, then they show the scene in the recap for the beginning of the next episode! The fantastic Battle of the river of the Dead is completely edited out but again you ger a few seconds in the recap for the next episode. The fight between Hu San Niang and her sister is also completely gone, among many other scenes which really makes a mess of the series. I remember they reran the series on BBC 2 in 1982/83 about 5 p.m. and these scenes were cut for the junior audience, it looks like they have just transferred this onto tape. I was really disappointed when it was released on DVD as I thought the scenes would have been replaced, like they did with Enter the Dragon but no, it's still the cut version. Worth watching if like me you were a big fan of the series and it's the only way to see it but it's a shame the whole series was not released unedited. Very disappointing.
