The Angel and the Cad: Love, Loss and Scandal in Regency England
The Angel and the Cad: Love, Loss and Scandal in Regency England
Price: £9.29

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent and thorough bringing to life the trials of a bad marriage, 31 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd had never heard of the people in this book, but couldn't put it down. Mary did what so many of either sex do now, marry for love and think the world well lost. But unlike now the consequences of marrying a cad are almost beyond imagining. But Mr Pole takes my breath away entirely, his conceit and self deceit are awesome. A really well written, thoroughly interesting and informative book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, very enlightening, 4 Aug. 2015

I read some reviews prior to buying this that nearly stopped me buying this book. I'm so glad I bought it even in the face of some detractors. It covers the royal brothers in chronological order and uses a wealth of well researched sources to reveal what they did and their characters. The brothers both seem to be accurately portrayed and I don't think it's writing was heavily biased against the duke of Windsor, rather the writer allows recorded facts colour his character in, and equally so for George VI. The end is rushed and doesn't deal in detail with the kings later years with the same wealth and depth of information as the pre and war years, but that's understandable given its those years (pre and war) that are the bones that support the body of this portrayal. Excellent book, will re-read with pleasure and highly recommend

1.0 out of 5 stars don't bother, useless, 3 Aug. 2015

If had cost even a penny it would be wasted, what a crock! Seems to have to have a zip code to work, and won't let you use uk postcode so obviously useless in uk. But worse is the almost instant flicking you off to ads, useless and annoying

Matriarch: Queen Mary and the House of Windsor
Matriarch: Queen Mary and the House of Windsor
Price: £5.00

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written, thoroughly enjoyable biography, 2 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I usually read pre civil war, but I decided I was a little ignorant of our current queens grandmother, the formidable Queen Mary. This book took me through her life logically, and made her life very real, a strong woman who stood for her belief in constitutional monarchy absolutely. I didn't expect to like her at all, but I quickly found her story gripping and strangely compelling. The book is an easy, but detailed read and gives a good insight into all the characters not just Queen Mary. Highly recommended.

Excellent medium firm mattress, sent promptly and delivered well packaged, it's been in use for a few months now and its fine. It is more medium than firm I would say, but comfortable. Very deep and I'm very pleased with it.

Zoo Station (John Russell series Book 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 16 Jun. 2015

By far the best novel of this type I've read, the main character is so believable that you experienced with him his confusion, dismay, his choices. I've read a few le carre and found them tough going, but this was a clever, but easy read. I will be buying more books from this author.l

Innocence
Innocence
Price: £4.49

5.0 out of 5 stars A departure from the norm, 14 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Innocence (Kindle Edition)
I surprised myself by buying this book as I didn't enjoy the previous DK books I've read, but the review made it sound something different, and it was. I found the quality of writing to be extremely good, very beautiful, brilliantly able to conjure glittering city, the darkness, the lightness, joy and sadness. The use of language was incredibly moving and almost poetic. The story itself was transformed by the writing into something gripping, but uplifting. I was all set to buy the innocence book 2 only to find that it's the same book, that was a disappointment. It doesn't affect the quality of writing, but reflects badly on the person who decided to split this stand alone story into four, for presumably more money.

Two Years of Tenko: Life as a sixteen year old in a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp
Two Years of Tenko: Life as a sixteen year old in a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp
Price: £2.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Sad, but honest, 7 Jun. 2015
Not an in depth examination, so lacks in a way the means of truly conveying the awfulness of the things the writer endured. But non the less it is a true account, not done by a professional writer, not paraphrased or added to, her own words and is valuable for that.

The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife and the Missing Corpse: An Extraordinary Edwardian Case of Deception and Intrigue
The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife and the Missing Corpse: An Extraordinary Edwardian Case of Deception and Intrigue
Price: £5.79

4.0 out of 5 stars A truth stranger than fiction, 5 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I stumbled on this book whilst looking for a good historical read. I simply couldn't believe it, and yet it is true. I really couldn't put it down and was fascinated by the intricacies and surprises that continued to unfold. Well written and logically laid out we start with the, well to be honest, rather strange request of a daughter-in-law to open her father-in-law's coffin, and from there it just gets, well more unexpected.

The Sinking of the Lancastria: Britain's Greatest Maritime Disaster and Churchill's Cover-Up
The Sinking of the Lancastria: Britain's Greatest Maritime Disaster and Churchill's Cover-Up
Price: £6.33

5.0 out of 5 stars An sad but detailed complete overview of the Lancastria sinking, 3 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The sinking of the Lancastria is little known, apparently an oversight. This book goes through the stories of many survivors starting from the start of the Fall of France to the arrival of survivors home. It is a very moving read in as much as the what ifs and whys that it highlights mean this tragedy may have been avoided.
