1.0 out of 5 stars Another wildlife book lacking order or structure, 5 May 2014
Expensive, pretty, but useless for identifying anything. Within the themes of plan / animal etc, there is no patterm no system, to help you find things. Items are not arraged by colour, habitat, size, in alphabetical order or anything else I can detect. I liked the pictures, but I should've looked closer before I bought it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless as a field guide, 5 May 2014
So agree with Peter. Expensive, pretty book, but useless for identifying anything. Within the themes of plan / animal etc, there is no patterm no system, to help you find things. Items are not arraged by colour, habitat, size, in alphabetical order or anything else I can detect. Useless, impulse purchase because it was a DK book - I should've looked closer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Among all the many 'complexity' books this IS the best, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Steven Strogatz brings together real-world applications of scientific insights in an utterly absorbing manner. OK, so much hyperbole has been written and superlatives used about many other one-word title books (eg, Blink, Linked, Prey, Chaos, Bursts etc). But he is one of the true masters of his craft. Superbly knowledgable, skilled in his use of science and maths, and yet fully in tune with their limitations and the essentail importance of the human element. His examples are astounding!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true leader modestly documents his achievements, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rory Stewart's book is reaally excellent - and his reputation and credentials are second to none. Given the pressure, and personal danger, that he experienced his balanced narrative is most impressive. On a par with T E Lawrence, and following the footsteps of Gertude Bell 100 years earlier, Stewart makes the best of an intensly complex and frustrating situation. One of his last quotes is so telling, as he stands on the remains of the Ziggurat of Ur after the handover ceremony: "When it was nearly dark, I suggested we walk down. Asad, who had been one of the leaders of the attack on our compound, said, ‘We will all miss you. Everyone in the province knows you and admires you. We know how hard you have worked. We wish you could stay. You are our hero.’ ‘What are you talking about, Asad – why were you firing mortars and trying to kill me five weeks ago?’ ‘Ah, Seyyed Rory,’ he replied with a grin, ‘that was nothing personal.’ ". Superb.

[ WAR STORIES BY BOWEN, JEREMY](AUTHOR)PAPERBACK
[ WAR STORIES BY BOWEN, JEREMY](AUTHOR)PAPERBACK
by Jeremy Bowen
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating Biography of War reporting, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This informal set of recollections is excellent and gives an uncompromising insight into wars and war reporting. Jeremy is honest about his sucesses and mistakes and about the risks that he and others take on his behalf, and in the end, on our behalf. Humbling to read, at times a little repetitive, but still fascinating. His optimism, given the horrors that he has seen is very thought provoking. Needs to be read more than one - and not in a hurry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, insightful, authoritative, 15 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Jeremy Bowen's extensive experience in and around the Middle East and his balanced reporting come together into this excellent book. Without saying it in words of one syllable, he predicts where the Middle East is likely to go next and where that leaves the local players and the world powers. It doesn't look hopeful.

Having spent 4 months in Damascus, I recognise all he says as correct. Also, as he is not a man who can be tricked by 'minders' from and faction, regime or country (or religion), you get the inside view. Fascinating. And all in a very readable and modest style.
