5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable new slant on fairy tales, 21 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Indexing (Kindle Edition)
I bought Indexing when browsing offers on Amazon, and am glad I did. Like the Jasper Fforde this deals with metafiction - memes from fairy stories as incursions into our "reality" and the team of people who deal with them. High concept material written as a police procedural, and great fun - I've already spotted some fan fiction using the characters (imitation being the sincerest form of flattery). If you like Jim Butcher's books, it's hard to see why you wouldn't like, or even prefer, this. An enjoyable escapist read, but dealing with some real world issues in a sensitive and positive manner. Good stuff. I guess Seanan McGuire won't get rich on my 99p, but I will be buying the rest of her books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Undemanding Harry Potter for real grown-ups, 20 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you like Jim Butcher's work and you aren't put of by 'alternative' lifestyles this could keep you nicely entertained for a few hours. A nice parallel to the real world - the protagonist hopes that she's doing the right thing in working for a government agency tasked with keeping control of magic in a world where it has become the equivalent of nuclear weapons - we want to have it, but we don't want them (the terrorists) to have it. Quite a lot of subtle references to LGBT issues, no preaching, but I can see that it might annoy homophobes, so if you are one, you've been warned. A lot to like and very little to not like in a well-written and entertaining book with a lot of heart.

The Woman in White
The Woman in White
by Collins Wilkie
Edition: Audio CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and innovative mystery novel, 6 Mar 2013
This review is from: The Woman in White (Audio CD)
If you haven't tried this book, and you like Sherlock Holmes, or Victorian mystery fiction in general, treat yourself. You can't go wrong - Collins at the height of his powers, even influencing Dickens (The Mystery of Edwin Drood). A classic in all senses of the word.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Borrowed" from Wikipedia, 29 April 2012
Simply put this book is everything that Wikipedia has about EC Comics, Mad, the Mad TV offshoots etc, cut and pasted into a book format and (I suspect) printed with print on demand technology. Buy it if you must, but really....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and reasonably priced, but large men beware..., 17 April 2012

Excellent product for us Big Bang Theory fans - we love Sheldon, and now we can guess at his chest measurement. My wife and daughter have excellent results from this and it really saves time. If - like my son and I - you are of larger frame - we span XL to 3XL - you'll find you have to fold your sleeves in first and allow an appropriate overlap on the clothes folder so that you don't end up with the back of your shirt overlapping several inches above the front. With these caveats this is a great tool and well priced - the one Sheldon uses is $19 in the states, which has mysteriously (last time I looked) translated to the thick end of 28 here. Good value and will speed up your folding by an amazing amount.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little works of art..., 26 Jan 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These facsimile editions of Christie have a great secondary use: a history of book cover art / graphic design in the twentieth century. For a modest sum you can enjoy book covers from the 20s to the 70s in all their glory, although as we hit the 70s it all gets a little dull. Oh, yes: the stories are quite good as well! Now if we can just get facsimile Marsh, Queen, Sayers...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality picks, 26 Jan 2010

Excellent quality finger picks at a good price from a very helpful vendor. Where I live it costs more than three of these to get the bus to my local musical instrument store... I like the fact they are soft enough to adjust for each finger, then you can mark each up with a sharpie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely judged cross between ghost story and not-so-cosy crime, 20 Aug 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Think 'The Lovely Bones' with a crime setting. Written by Katy Munger under her Chaz MgGee pen name, Desolate Angel is the story of Kevin Fahey, a mediocre-to-poor cop, a drunk, a bad husband and father, and all-round dead guy. He has been a lost soul since his murder (which he has only a blurred recollection of) when he encounters the spirit of a murder victim - a murder he thought he had solved. The spirit leads him to a fresh victim, and Fahey realises that the wrong man is in jail and the real killer is still operating. In joining with his old partner, Danny, and his replacement, Maggie to solve the murder Fahey begins to understand his own life and solves the mystery of his death.
Despite the melancholy tone, this book is hard to put down, and, despite the supernatural context, is surprisingly uncompromising when dealing with the realities of life. Not cheery, but definitely memorable, and unlike many pot-boiler serial killer novels this will stay with you.

Serpieri Sketchbook
Serpieri Sketchbook

2.0 out of 5 stars Really not that great, 20 Aug 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Serpieri Sketchbook (Hardcover)
If you are thinking of buying this there are a few things you should be aware of. It is about the size of a comic book. That wouldn't be an issue, but I'm pretty sure the contents have been scaled down from a bigger book as the reproduction of Serpieri's work is not great. The main issue I have with it, however, is that there are as many pages of badly written 'erotica' as drawings, making this an expensive hard cover jazz mag. If you want an expensive version of Forum, with badly reproduced drawings, this is for you. Otherwise I'd look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Effective, cheap stand, 7 Feb 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nice effective cheap stand. If you sometimes have friends around to play guitar with you these are a cost-effective way of making sure that there is somewhere to part their guitars. If you own a vintage or very expensive guitar I'd buy something more expensive - these can tip over if you don't park your guitar correctly - but in 99% of cases these do nicely, at a very good price.
