4.0 out of 5 stars A sheep in wolf's clothing, 22 Aug 2006
This review is from: Kung Fu Hustle [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
Boy, did this movie suck at the beginning! And boy, did it just get better and better from there on in. Even the Oriental humor, which is usually so awful, was actually funny at times. The action sequences, while a little too often fanciful, were very impressive, even innovative. Chow is a talented guy. Having seen this I'm interested to see what his earlier work is like. If you like martial arts/action/weird comedy, you'll love this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Praying for engine trouble., 22 Aug 2006
This review is from: Hitch [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
Saw this as an inflight movie. Boy, did I pray for engine trouble, so we'd have to land. Sucks or what? I liked Smith in 'I, robot', 'Independence day', etc, but this was awful. It's a one-joke movie. Problem is the one joke was the one plastered all over the TV spots and trailers (the jet ski incident). The highlights involved the subplot of him teaching a guy to be cool - wish that'd been the main storyline instead - far, far superior! Will not be adding this to my wishlist.

3.0 out of 5 stars No Saturday night special., 22 Aug 2006
This review is from: Underworld [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Kate Beckinsale is stunning in this - take her out and the movie kinda falls flat. The story's nothing special. The effects are decent, but nothing ground-breaking. The acting is capable. The premise of werewolves fighting vampires is cool, but a more involving plotline would've been even cooler. (Can't say more without spoilers.) All in all it got the level of acclaim it deserved and nothing more. Worth seeing, but instantly forgetable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cool but lacking, 22 Aug 2006
This review is from: Constantine [DVD] (DVD)
There are some cool ideas and action sequences here, but the script doesn't do them justice. You never really feel Constantine is in that much danger, that there's anything he can't handle. Without that, it's just a guy going through the motions. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent movie, just not the movie it could've been. Pity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic comic book action, 8 Aug 2006
What a fantastic movie. The first was okay, but this just blows it out of the water. The characters are more fully developed; the set pieces are on a much grander scale; new characters are introduced; the dialogue still sparkles; the story thunders along with enough action to please anyone. This is the way comic books should be brought to life. Singer really knows his beans! If X-men 3 is as big an improvement on this, as this was on the first, it'll be the film of the year. This rocks!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning visuals and a cool story, 8 Aug 2006
I vaguely remember this receiving quite indifferent to positively damning reviews when it hit the cinemas, but I love it. Okay, it's the usual cliché - misfit relents and saves the day, but just sit back and revel in the magnificent sets, the sheer scale, the superb special effects, the thrilling action... I know most people prefer Riddick's first outing (Pitch Black), but this is a great movie and deserves much more appreciation than it generally gets.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good movie ruined., 8 Aug 2006
I came to this movie expecting to be blown away. I was. By the dreadful editing which made the action sequences totally unwatchable. The Matrix set new standards for action movies and what is to be expected of stars - gone are the days of a stuntman jumping in just to open an envelope in case the star gets a paper cut - now they can expect to spend months training to pull off realistic action choreography. Well, only if the editing lets you see that action and doesn't jump around so much you can't follow a single thing. So, I don't know if Bale learned to kick butt or if he used a stand-in, but it doesn't matter as you can't tell what's happening anyway.

As if that isn't bad enough, they then reveal Batman's back story - some screw loose loon saved by Tibetan Temple, Ninja-style training and philosophy. I don't know the comic genealogy to know how close this is to the origins of Batman, but it just didn't work for me. The temple and philosophy? Maybe. A ninja? Get out of here.

The Batmobile was cool. Caine and Freeman delivered as they always do, though they didn't have a great deal to work with. The plot had holes. The story was passable. The sets impressive. The action sequences just blurry mush. See it or don't see it, but it's not a movie to cry about if you miss it.

Really, really, REALLY disappointed with this movie.
