5.0 out of 5 stars A Treat for Lovers of Elgar, 20 Oct. 2014
The central part of this book considers the relationship between Sir Edward Elgar and his friend Helen Weaver, to whom he was engaged in the 1870s. The investigation takes the form of a series of imaginary letters between Edward and Helen. Although the letters are fictional, the facts implied by them have been well researched and will increase the readers’ knowledge and understanding of England’s greatest composer.

Merivale believes that Helen was the unnamed friend in the 13th of the Enigma Variations, and also the soul enshrined in the Violin Concerto. Other names have been mentioned in this context as Elgar was concerned to spare his wife’s feelings, but this view is supported by the evidence of Elgar’s friend Ivor Atkins who believed that Helen was the real dedicatee.

The book also tells us of Merivale’s own response to the composer and her sympathetic feelings towards Helen Weaver.

There is a huge amount of knowledge here, but I found it quite hard work. There are so many unfamiliar names of people and places that a great deal of background reading was required.

This is an amazing performance. It is mimed which is regrettable, but in spite of that it is overwhelming both dramatically and musically.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stunning Otello, 14 Jan. 2013

Vickers must be the greatest Otello of all time. I saw him in the flesh at Covent Garden. He brings an extra dimension of intensity to the part, as well as a remarkable voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jon Vickers is overwhelming as Grimes, 22 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wonderful performance of Peter Grimes. It is cast at a very high level and Jon Vickers is here in one of his greatest roles. For those who remember these great performances it is a document to be treasured. For those too young to remember Vickers at the height of his powers it is an essential historical archive.

4.0 out of 5 stars A frustrated mezzo, 16 Aug. 2010
This is enjoyable but frustrating. She clearly wishes she had been Birgit Nilsson. But she was a wonderful performer. We must be grateful to have had a mezzo of such ability, not regretful that we did not have another dramatic soprano.

Bridges: The science and art of the world's most inspiring structures
Bridges: The science and art of the world's most inspiring structures

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating introduction to the world's bridges for the general reader, 7 July 2010
This book is written by a professor of engineering, but with the general reader in mind. Although it deals with technical matters, these are presented in a way that does not require a high level of mathematics or physics. It has 50 illustrations including many magnificent photographs.

The structure of the book is as clear as the structure of the bridges that it discusses. After an introductory chapter it considers the four main types of bridge in turn; beams, arches, trusses, and suspension. It then considers the question of safety, and finally the development and maintenance of bridges as team work.

Bridges are considered as works of art as well as civil engineering, and the book is very rich in references to other arts and to culture in the widest sense, with references to Newton, Kant, Michelangelo, Giotto, Palladio, Herodotus, Tracey Emin, Antony Gormley, and many others. David Blockley also considers bridges as symbols, icons, landmarks, and as objects of inspiration.

There are fascinating sections on many celebrated bridges including the wobbly Millennium Bridge, the Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Salginatobel Bridge, and the Millau Viaduct.

This is also a book that could be of value to schools. It brings maths and physics to life, and could be a vehicle for taking students on trips to visit bridges to see how these disciplines are used in practice in ways that are important as transport links as well as being imaginative and inspirational.
