4.0 out of 5 stars A really funny take on the Porn Industry, 5 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Dirty Minds (Kindle Edition)
The Author achieves a clever trick of weaving a very amusing tale about porn authors, but without being pornographic. I loved the idea of a collaborative group of writers from totally different backgrounds getting together to outdo "Fifty Shades" and the characters are skilfully portrayed and the development of the plot is very well done. There is lots of fun and clever dialogue and I really enjoyed this during a beach holiday, so much so that several others wanted to borrow my kindle to read it. No luck for them I am afraid, since I was on to my next book, but they all took the details. Although it is a light hearted read, it does expose some of the serious issues behind the porn industry and makes you think about the curious way humans behave when they are unconstrained by scrutiny, social context or society's rules. It's an excellent read for intelligent people who need a good laugh with a bit of spice, but it is not for the dirty mac brigade.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cheerful, amusing read for holidays and travel, 5 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having enjoyed the first of this series ("Dirty Minds"), I downloaded this light hearted story from the same author. It creates an amusing scenario and then lets the characters play with it. Among the characters is Jasper the dog that any dog lover will instantly understand and bond with. However the fun and humour is underpinned by some serious medieval scholarship which could start one off on an historical journey, chasing down the references. I opened the Kindle at the start of a long plane and train journey which passed in a flash, since I was chuckling at the images created in my mind by the author. I was aware of my neighbour reading over my shoulder and having the odd laugh too - hastily converted to a cough so as to hide her interest! If you want an amusingly wicked look at modern attitudes and a fun read, this is for you. Not recommended for prudes or the humourless.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant Album, 12 Feb 2014

Marilla Ness has a nice voice and the album contains a number of well orchestrated religious songs. Some of them are a bit syrupy, but in the main they are some of the better contemporary devotional arrangements available today. This track is the best version of the hymn I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginner's and amateur's watercolour set, 12 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is just the job for travelling and contains all that you need for watercolour sketching on the move. Despite being aimed at beginners, I have found the colours to be of good quality with very satisfactory opacity and permanence. The case is what makes it for me, being large enough for additional brushes, colours and pencils which you inevitably accumulate as time passes and yet small enough to go in a satchel with paper and a picnic. It is well-priced and practical and I have not felt the need to get anything more expensive.

2.0 out of 5 stars Paper feed from rear fails and print quality deteriorating, 26 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This printer was easy to set up with a USB from my iMac and initially the print quality was excellent. I previously had an XP620 All-in-one which was robust and gave excellent service for 5 years right up until the day it gave me a screen message to say that it was worn out four months ago. I was surprised at the flimsy build quality of the Expression XP-750 when it arrived, compared to it's predecessor, and have treated it like eggs since installation in case the scanner cover or paper tray got damaged. Because I need to address envelopes and use 260 gsm photo paper occasionally, the rear feeder was important, but right from the start it proved temperamental, pushing the envelope straight through and then printing the address on a sheet of A4 if I wasn't quick enough to catch the envelope and feed it in again. I have read the guide and tried every way to overcome this but the rear feeder just does not work properly. I do not print a lot of photographs but when I do I am looking for top quality. Firstly, I was astonished how quickly the small ink cartridges ran out. I found that they are not available from retailers in my area yet and have to be ordered on line. My second disappointment is that I have recently been getting poor print quality with a new batch of Epson inks with strange colour imbalances. I have had to use frequent head cleaning and alignment checks to try and maintain quality and for the first time ever I am planning to return an item to Amazon. Before I do, I would be interested if anyone else has rear feeder problems or has found a way of making it work properly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fay and White Stylus for the iPad3, 8 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This stylus works after a fashion, but is too spongy for detailed pointing. I found that I was having to press harder and harder to get the screen to respond. In the end I reverted to using my fingers. If you put the pointer on the screen and wait, the screen will eventually respond, but it's all too slow. This may be a common problem with all styluses, but I do not yet know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Painting Light in Oils Peter Wileman and Malcolm Allsop, 4 July 2012

This review is from: Painting Light in Oils (Hardcover)
I have had this book for a month now and am very happy with it. Although I have been an amateur painter for some years, there is so much good sense and practical advice in this book, as well as helpful examples and some lovely finished paintings, that I rate it as one of the most useful in my library. Wileman's work appears to have roots in a distinguished line of British artists, among whom I include Edward Seago and Trevor Chamberlain, who have all achieved brilliant representations of season, time of day, atmosphere, energy and scene in two-dimensional paint on canvas. I have found plenty of inspiration and good guidance in this book and would recommend it to any artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beach Tent Shelter UPF50, 4 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Beach tent UPF 50
The tent arrived very quickly and proved to be simple, fairly robust and effective. The poles are a bit fiddly to insert and remove from their pockets and you must remember to put stones or sand in the side pockets if there is a wind. The grandchildren loved it and it was a light and practical item to carry down to the beach on a bucket and spade holiday. If you sweep it out before re-packing and are careful with the poles it should last several seasons. It shouldn't be used in strong winds, unless you really weight it down inside. Otherwise it provides good sun protection, privacy and shelter from chilly breezes.
