4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy, 31 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is comprehensive of course but its size and weight make it an awkward volume to wield when I'm trying to improve on spellcheck at my Mac.

by Jean Dunlop
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Top study, 31 Mar. 2013

Dunlop does very well and covers just about every angle that she should, although a little more explanation of how the BFS was constituted would have been welcomed

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave!, 31 Mar. 2013

This review is from: If You Leave (Audio CD)
One or two standout tracks make the album worth its purchase but overall there's just a little too much similarity

I need more mapwork and more accurate details of progress to be able to follow the route of the expeditions

My Landeskarte Blatt 5008 from 1961 is infinitely superior to this one, even though it might be a little out of date!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad maps, poor linkage with text, 20 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The text and the maps (essential to understand the story) did not make a good fit. Essentially, too much of the text made assumptions of the reader's geographical knowledge and the maps are badly drawn, in some cases unreadable. There are some good chapter introductory paragraphs that set the context but then the following detail tends to get mired in complexity.

5.0 out of 5 stars I review because I want to, 21 April 2010
This is the best album by anyone since Klima's debut a few years ago. Laura Marling is a huge talent.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Epic True Story that Inspired 'Moby Dick'
In the Heart of the Sea: The Epic True Story that Inspired 'Moby Dick'
by Nathaniel Philbrick
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Good on you, whaley!, 25 Mar. 2009
A very, very good book. The pages keep turning as the barely credible details of the story pan out. One day books like this will include maps to match the detail of the text. Helpful as the two maps offered are, the scale is too small, though curiously the Essex's route north from Cape Horn includes detours which don't appear in the narrative. Never mind, this one goes into the library and will be read again. I'm even tempted to dig out my Melville and try again at that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revealing, surprising, exciting, 25 Mar. 2009
Philbrick writes a well-structured book that reveals what it was really like for the Mayflower pioneers. Where it falls short perhaps, is in context. He might have outlined more fully what what was happening in Virginia at the same time as this story was playing out. It reads almost as a blow for blow account but I thought that he didn't spend time enough on the colonization of greater New England in the decades between the Mayflower landing and Philip's War. But hey, a good read.
