HALLOWEEN II ROCKS, 15 Feb 2010
Blu ray disk: The video quality is awesome. SImple as that. I mean visually the movie is stunning and this blu ray transfer embraces it! Audio wise, the slashing effects are really cool and especially interesting is the absent of music. Tyler Bates score is creepy and works perfectly in 5.1 audio DTS from this disc. Minor problem is the lack of extras. There are some auditons from the cast, make-up designs(but not how the make up effects were created which would have been far more interesting) and a blooper reel. I would like personally a documentary from ROb Zombie. The reasons are explained below.
Movie: I am a hardcore horror fan. I've seen pretty much everything. I love the original Halloween but i hate the sequels. When i heard that Rob will touch the original i said " this movie is a perfect piece of filmaking". Although i like Rob's vision in his previous movies i was worried what he could possible bring to the story. TO my surprise i was impressed. IT's his Halloween not a stupid remake. And i loved that. So in halloween II, Zombie is on the loose. He is doing what he wanted to do without any studio pressure. THis is obvious since the film is very brutal and weird but i will get to that later. This is not the typical hack n slash movie. Characters look more down to earth and have motives. I mean take a look at laurie. She is so messed up whereas in other films i guess we see the girls progressing into a normal life after violent murders and becoming isolated and stuff like that. Here, the cute little girl from the first film has evolved into a party animal who doesn't care about her appearance after what she is being through. I found that way more interesting than seeing her somewhere on the woods alone reading books. For me it is more believable. On the other hand her friend the party animal from the first film, turns into vegeterian and refuses to go out of her house which is pretty amazing storywise. It is something that we rarely see in a horror film. I am not saying it is perfectly done but it takes courage to make the film look believable while avoiding any commercial traps.
Now for the gore factor, there is not a lot although people were screaming that this movie is violent and gory. Yes it is violent but not bloody! With the exception of the first two murders, there are not buckets of blood or guts and stuff like that. U may see a deformed body(from a car crash or already being dead by michael) but never on screen. Usually it is the sillouette of Myers in the dark committing the murders. The only thing u see is the movement. nothing else. However, the audio is doing a perfect job of trasmitting all the possible slashing effects so we can use our imagination. Myers now is a hermit (kinda of) and that's something cool. He sees himself as a little boy that wants to please his mother(she appears in visions). It is a common belief that michael has lost it completely. Again it is rare to see the phychological portait of a killer with such a background instead of having him there slicing people into pieces with no reason at all.
Speaking of the visions, there were the controversial points. I didn't mind them and they are visually stunning. The director of photography is absolutely doing a fabulous job, with street lights, purple visions, spooky forests, creepy hallways and many more. Nevertheless, they betray rob's origins as he is used to direct many of his videoclips as well as those of others (Ozzy Ozborne, powerman 5000). His camera shots are static and he lurks like a predator of his potential victims. I really enjoyed his approach on the hospital scene. Literally it is a nightmare! The angle shots, the movement, everything looks like a nightmare! The cast is good. Laurie looks like a believable character as i mentioned before and Brad Dourif's presence(as well as his daughters) is one of the highlights. Now all the above are good stuff but what about any negative points?
True the film is not perfect. There are certain storylines that could have been served better like the relationship between annie and laurie(more phychological factors and a nice conversation or a verbal fight between them would have been counted as a plus). Many characters in addition, offer nothing like laurie's friends or even Dr Loomis himself. There were more satellites persons especially loomis who doesn't serve a purpose on screen and we don't get to understand his motives. This iconic character is well loved in the horror audience and here he behaves like a complete arrogant guy (don't want to use any bad language). Why? Because he survived etc??? See my point?
Overall though i love the movie. It has great atmosphere, we don't see a killer who is unstoppable, it has a different approach to a boring these days theme but controversial nevertheless. I give it 10 out of 10(no kidding), just because Rob Zombie did a movie for him and his audience and not something mainstream. Somce choices may not be the best ones as i already mentioned above but certainly u can not deny that he tried to do something different. I enjoyed every minute of it and it was nice to see atmosphere and not blood and guts and stupid girls running around for no reason.
P.S there is also a nice cameo from Weird Al.
10/10 for the effort
7/10 as a film
