Wild Smile... An Anthology
Wild Smile... An Anthology
Price: 12.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb anthology to one of Britain's forgotten sons, 6 April 2014
The late Epic soundtracks managed to release four solo albums in his short lifetime . A passionate record collector himself , his songs sometimes became a swirl of influences from Alex Chilton, Burt Bacharach Brian Wilson..but always with an unmistakeably maverick quality that was his . The sound on this is fine as far as im concerned ive played it at home in the car ..
Wonderful booklet put together by people that obviously care . The brilliant Jelly Babies is featured here as it was only issued on 7" featuring the vocals of the great Robert Wyatt.. Other guests that appear throughout are, Lee Ranaldo & Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jnr, Anthony Thistlewaite from the Waterboys and the truly legendary Rowland S Howard. Disc one is a compilation of key tracks from the four released albums Disc two is all unreleased or rare gems ...what a delight !

overseen by the steadfast Geoff Love and his dynamic orchestra

5.0 out of 5 stars ..the sound of breaking glass .. . Strange Moon Rising =Superb !, 2 Feb 2014

Strange Moon rising ..sounds like the girls have gotten some Louisiana pre war blues player sat in on the session .. the perfect harmonies of the vocals and really like Smoke Fairies to an old rocker like me this is a breath of fresh air in British music right now

ok Requiem ..i cant make my mind up on this its one of my all time favourite tracks by KJ and anyone attempting a cover is entering sacred territory ...i'm just not sure . They covered 'If i were a carpenter' and delivered THE best version of a classic song ive ever heard ..these two ARE that good !

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Britain's musical treasures...and not from decades ago..... its NOW!, 2 Feb 2014

Sunshine ..is the perfect gateway into this audio voyage of discovery ..and pleasure .Followed by its original B side When you grow Old . I rate Smoke Fairies as the most exciting new British act combining an alternative folk tinged with old blues and rock. Superbly recorded, with legends such as drummer Andy Newmark guesting there is nothing out there like this lot . A lot of people are taking these girls very seriously indeed . This is a compilation of singles n stuff and the perfect way to immerse yourself in what this pair have been up to so far. the blend of vocals delivered by both Katherine Blamire & Jessica Davies feels like it must have taking decades to finely tune to arrive at what we are listening to on this album. But as impressive is the guitar playing which is utterly superb . If your a fan of Fahey or Michael Chapman you will appreciate the playing here ..listen to 'Troubles' or 'Frozen heart' my advice is grab your self a copy then get the new album as there's even more amazing stuff on there too. !

discovered this pair when i heard their wonderful cover of Tim Hardings If I Were A Carpenter ..one of the best covers ive heard in years ! so delved back into the catalogue and into this superb album . A great subtle mixture of sounds that seem to come from years gone by with new twists and turns with a very much contemporary overall feel.

Something very unique in my opinion ...try and listen to some as soon as you can !

4.0 out of 5 stars why is it some of the best American music appears on Non American record labels, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
i only discovered the wonderful karen dalton recently .. rare and obscure but totally convincing American Folk/Blues ...the vocal style of Billie Holliday with a kind of Joplin sassiness . Especially on It Hurts Me Too or Little bit of Rain.
Original issued in 1969 and recorded at The Record Plant in New York has remained un aired until French label Megaphone Music introduced the catalogue of Karen Dalton to the world at large

a big Merci beacoups to them

this is cool

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, 23 Mar 2013

Firstly the package is great . Nick cave out on his own, away from Mute for the first time comes up with a superb ltd edition version ( hard back book a5 size with cd album and dvd featuring needle boy & lightning bolts ..not on the audio disc...better than many of the major label stuff .

the album, more importantly, is a wonderful collection of songs kicking off with we no who ur a very simple introduction with nicks vocals being shadowed by martha skye murphy to great effect over a repetitive beat and warren ellis flute ..very smooth ..waters edge has more of an edge to it with its warning of 'local boys ' whereas its predecessor wide lovely eyes is more a melodic ballad " your dress sighs with your wide lovely stride". Lush strings are peppered throughout this album none more so in the ascending jubilee street.mermaids has one of the most enchanting chorus lines once gain melody is king here . we real cool has martyn caseys rumbling bass with caves vocals recited a top with piano and strings fleshing out the song majestically.finishing jubilee street is a curiosity which is a song about nick finishing the earlier track and a recital about a dream that ensued features barry adamson on bass.Higgs bosun blues is the epic of the pack at 7.51 and utterly delightful every second of it ..the final track is the hauntingly beautiful title. Needle boy is much more abrasive .. at the time of writing there are 50 reviews of this album of which 42 are awarded 4/5 stars.. this is a great album and i dont think im being hysterical ..i just really like it .
Whilst cave remains edgy and deep , its almost like an introduction to nick cave and the bad seeds if you never owned one of his albums. ive played this to friends who've not got nick cave albums and they have loved it
