5.0 out of 5 stars The real sound authority, 8 Aug. 2011
This review is from: Sanctuary (Audio CD)
After being blown away by the debut solo single " You ask of me the earth " ( which is as close to the term 'Classic' as one could get ) Sanctuary offers more of Julie's own handiwork as a songwriter and down right superb singing . A mixed bag of simple acoustic songs Suzie, Letter from yesterday, Talking to strangers sees Julies dynamic voice weave around subtle and tender subjects in such an emotive way that you become sucked into the story then gives you the full force of the girl from BSA on the poppier opener Love is home tonight and closer Were not perfect people. None of this is run of the mill singer-songwriter fare Hadwen is one of the best British female vocalists Ive heard and now with her own songs lets hope we see her back again with more !
A great album

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Big Sound Authority, 8 Jun. 2011
The return of this wonderful voice often lost amongst brass and the other bloke in the Big Sound Authority. This is Hadwen out on her own. Her own songs (thank god!)Her own style. There is an album of more of this on its way i'm told, but this is simply stunning. Described by Caroline Sullivan as " one of the better female voices since Brenda Lee " Possibly one of the most unsung British female singers of our time !

5.0 out of 5 stars one of Britains most underrated songwriters ?, 22 May 2011
This review is from: Dirty Birds (Audio CD)
astonishing ... in a time when the industry is struggling to come up with anything of quality and class this artist goes largely ignored by the masses. Maybe its down to marketing or money i dont know. This is one of my favourite albums in my collection (which is some several thousand strong)it contains bouncy upbeat tunes that you wanna blast out of your car on a sunny day "Go faster stripes ","Anti Climax",the swooning melody of "Lazy bones" and alongside the moody subtle velvet dripping epics such as the painfully beautiful "Saddest Blue Dress","Shotgun Wedding" & "Candy floss Branches ".I have been lucky enough to see Kat Flint live a few times and she is worth going to see if she comes to your town.If Im pushed very hard to pull a couple of faves id go for Ohio & Fearsome Crowd although these are the the older tracks on the album ( having been issued as a single prior to the album )quite brilliant lyrically
If Ms Flint can come up with something as good or dare i say even better will remain to be seen. But I love this album every last song it simply oozes character, a quirky humour and I hope and hope she makes another one !
If you dont believe me look at the other reviews ..go on treat yourself

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Show cheap looking product, 9 April 2011

Well you have a great band, great songs, brilliant sound, great performance and then you give it to a record label to make a mess of ! Appalling packaging makes this look like something you could get at a petrol station and for some reason the Cd has had the tracks re shuffled out of sequence ??!!
Also "In My dream home a Heartache" ?? sloppy typo

Viva Roxy Music it aint but the musics great (some wonderful Manzanera guitar ) and you got all the songs you want on here too. Both ends burning and Editions of you fair truck along with Paul Thompsons' tub thumping keeping the engine running at full speed .

4.0 out of 5 stars the most daring raid in British military history ?, 9 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wonderful book about an absolutely amazing subject, shamefully little known "Operation Chariot" involved the maddest raid on a Nazi submarine dock in France .

A book full of unsung British Heroes, Im not a war buff i just think this story is quite exceptional.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blood on Velvet, 27 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Awkward at moments , a little scary here and there but overall pure class ! An extraordinary talent, beautifully crafted songs dont be put off by the titles "I want him Dead" , You've hung the wrong bitch " this isn't some Psycho bunny boiling Joanna bashing bird but someone alot more clever than we deserve . Songs like Swim and Are we even now? show an inner brutal honesty . Let there be light which is more experimental musically, is a great aural delight in this box of tricks .
This aint no drive time radio songbook ...depends on where you're driving to ..i suppose
As a debut album this is daring , dangerous and certainly a non prisoner taking entity at work here . brilliant ..go seek it out and buy it .

5.0 out of 5 stars at last justice is done !, 29 Mar. 2009
for anyone that was touched by the music or the shaving foam, pubes or bits of drill of fad gadget / frank tovey this is worth every penny . i have the four albums and i dont think the label could have chucked them out in much more of a basic way . This, however, is something else altogether!key tracks have been remastered and nigh on blow your speakers off see lady shave, coitus interuptus, the box, collapsing new people and the track that blew my mind in 1979 does it gain here and that's Back to Nature. along with some magical moments of frank tovey's post fad stuff like the best version of sam hall i've heard and the powerful chasing the blues away . The late Tovey's family have been let loose with this and thank god they have the documentary is fascinating start to finish as is max decharnes' film Grand Union . so let me get this right two whole albums of re masterd killer tracks AND two dvd's !! oh for heavens sake buy this ..hopefully the original albums will get a proper make over ..one day ! five stars to BJ & the Tovey Frosts im so glad someone did this !! excellent !

4.0 out of 5 stars triumphant return to form, 25 Jan. 2009
This review is from: Home (Audio CD)
Ok i already like this artist although am not crazy on the huski side of things . first track 'while you were sleeping' is an immediate, powerful introduction to a fascinating album that appears to be a grown up companion to chasing eva. 'quiet the silent world' and 'mirror' follow on with the tempo at full tilt this is fantastic pop! Only critism is a tad too much electronic goings on, the songs themselves are brilliantly crafted, would love to have heard the demoes .'Me and rose' brings us back to the acoustic stripped down music that maple bee is so capable of bringing to us with an air of fantasy and mysticism that sets her aside from many out there, the chorus is to die for. Same with 'No Place' which is a simple but beautiful guitar and piano tune and 'Sweetness in your light' 'So far from lost' are dream like acoustic melodies which i could listen to forever. Similarly with 'queen 23' with its recorders and constant drums high in the mix makes it stand out. The dark mix is still evident on tracks like the breathy "i want it all" and " somebody take me home" which balance the album up superbly . the final track 'this face this name' is the last thing you expect to hear on this album ..its huge !! you leave quite exhausted .
Overall an album of great songs brought to you with a balance of the beautifully stripped down and the huge Pop sound the light and the dark that all seem to fit perfectly inside the world of maple bee. great stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars down on the street, 10 Oct. 2008
this is where iggy pop is really at home ..on the stage ..transformed into a predatory animal pounding his chest and delivering killer lines like " im a street walkin cheetah with a heart full of naplam " they dont make 'em like that these days ! this box set is a superb document of iggys return in the mid seventies from exile in rehab or on the road as bowies travelling companion. It has quite obviously been put together with passion and care great photos , great shows the domino club 1978 with fred smith and gary rasmussen and scott asheton as his band is particularly high octane or indeed the 1979 show with ex pistol glen matlock and ex damned brian james both in the band !! not aimed at passive buyers but an absolute must for true iggy fans. cant wait for the next one !
